Job description

Title: Press Helper/Web Pressman I

Job Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt

Department: Offset Printing

Reports To: Pressroom Manager

1st Shift: 6 am -2:30 pm Monday - Friday

2nd shift: 4pm - 4am Monday - Wednesday

General purpose of Job: The Web Pressman I is an entrylevel position responsible for assisting in the operation of web printing presses under the direction of experienced press operators. This role focuses on learning press fundamentals, supporting daily production activities, maintaining quality standards, and following all safety procedures while developing the skills required for advancement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior press operators with setup, makeready, and press operation
  • Load paper rolls and help thread webs through the press
  • Monitor ink, water, and paper flow during production runs
  • Perform basic press adjustments as directed
  • Assist with press changeovers and cleanup
  • Inspect printed product for basic quality issues (registration, color, defects)
  • Pull and review samples at required intervals
  • Notify press operator of quality concerns or press issues immediately
  • Follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements
  • Maintain clean, organized press and work areas
  • Assist with routine press cleaning and preventive maintenance
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment malfunctions
  • Learn press components, controls, and operating principles
  • Participate in onthejob training and skill development programs
  • Demonstrate progression toward independent operation responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively with press crew, supervisors, and support staff
  • Support shift transitions with accurate production updates
  • Work collaboratively to meet production schedules and goals
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures for Offset Production
  • Other duties as assigned

Performance Measurement: Performance feedback will take place both verbally and written on a day-to-day as needed basis, recognition in monthly employee recognition meetings, formal training on changes in SOP as needed with a formal review by the supervisor at least annually

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or GED. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Basic mechanical aptitude. Willingness to learn web press operations

Language and Math Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on -one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.

Physical Demands:

Often standing or walking, may climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Often lift up to 40 lbs & sometimes up to 70 lbs. Use hands to finger, handle or feel. Reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, & ability to focus.

Work Environment:

Work near moving mechanical parts, fumes & air borne particles, risk of electrical shock, and exposure to toxic chemicals. The noise level is moderate to loud.
