Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Market President for the Houston market, you are responsible for developing and implementing strategic objectives and goals, allocating and managing capital/human resources, and general day-to-day operational accountability for assigned areas. Overall accountability and responsibility includes 1 quaternary care academic medical center, 8 acute care hospitals, and 2 free-standing Emergency Departments. You also have direct line authority over facility presidents overseeing multiple hospitals within Houston, including an academic medical center in the Texas Medical Center.

Every day you are responsible for producing exceptionally high employee engagement. This includes responsibility for the overall goal of increasing organizational effectiveness and revenues for assigned areas, developing annual operating budgets for those areas, and accountable for operating within established budgets. You are also responsible for maintaining productivity standards for areas of direct responsibility and assuring the availability of sufficient competent staff to meet the workload needs of departments. You have the authority and responsibility for meeting the bottom lines of quality and financial performance for the areas of accountability, and for ensuring customer loyalty as measured by patient satisfaction greater than the 75th percentile and other indicators. This leader will also ensure compliance with standards promulgated by regulatory and compliance agencies, and will develop and maintain collaborative physician relations building on their key roles as both partners and customers. The position reports to the President of the South Region.

To be successful in this role you must demonstrate the following skills/experience:

  • Participates in decision-making processes by collaborating with leaders from the governing body, health system management, hospital leadership council, medical staff, and clinical areas in ensuring each hospital's strategic plans, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans, and policies are met and achieved.
  • Executive-level oversight for the joint venture relationship(s) within Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.
  • Sets strategic direction for the above-mentioned areas, including planning and managing processes and services for these disciplines to meet the Houston market's current and future needs. Develops and integrates these plans and processes to support the vision, mission, and strategies.
  • Mentors and develops hospital presidents and staff to assume leadership roles both formally and informally, via role modeling and facilitating staff participation in a shared leadership structure. Directs the development, implementation, and administration of a shared decision-making model.
  • Plans, promotes, and conducts quality monitoring and enhancement activities; actively involved in advancing clinical outcomes and quality improvements within the framework of the Houston market’s Performance Improvement Plan. Collaboratively creates effective and ongoing programs to monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of care and services.
  • Provides for the development and management of operating and capital budgets for assigned areas. Responsible for overall Houston market financial performance, strategy, and business development, and associated outcomes.
  • Oversees best-in-class care delivery, operational excellence, and financial performance in both ambulatory and Hospital care settings.
  • Oversee and lead implementation of market programs that connect patients to the entire Integrated Delivery Network.
  • Executive oversight with regard to the establishment and implementation of patient care standards, including policies and procedures that meet national, state, and local rules and regulations as well as voluntary accreditation standards.
  • Directs creative strategies to lower costs while maintaining or enhancing quality.
  • Leverage market data to support data-driven decision making and reporting.
  • Lead contract negotiation and administration for contracted service as applicable.
  • Attract, recruit, and retain the best clinical and operational talent for the Market.
  • Support and provide input into Regional and Market workforce planning, leadership development, succession planning, and employee engagement.
  • Promote adherence to the mission, vision, culture, and values to accomplish One CommonSpirit.
  • Address and resolve QSPE or care delivery issues within the Market.
Job Requirements

Minimum Required Experience

  • 10 years of progressive executive leadership experience in a medical center/hospital.
  • Leadership in multiple hospitals preferred.

Minimum Level of Education

  • Master’s Degree

Critical Skills/Knowledge 

  • Comprehensive understanding of the health-care sector across the entire care continuum.
  • Strong understanding of budget management, P&L analysis, and capital allocation.
  • Experience with successful Market share growth and diversification, particularly within a healthcare environment.
  • Experience leading multiple hospital care settings.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent clinical/business skill acumen; Management skills suitable for a complex tertiary-level patient care setting.
  • Breadth of knowledge in all areas of the patient care environment.
