Civil Engineering Vice President and Managing Principal
Role Description: The Managing Principal (MP) will serve as a licensed Civil Engineer functioning as a Principal-in-Charge (PIC) or as a Project Manager (PM) on key civil engineering projects, while also operating as the Lead Principal for our Denver office and region. This position holds a Vice President title.
A Managing Principal at Huitt-Zollars shall be responsible for the Company's Brand, People, Project Delivery, Quality, and Administrative activities in a specific location/geography working alongside other PICs and PMs within the office. First and foremost, this candidate will function as Principal-in-Charge, with some additional responsibilities tied to being Managing Principal of an office.

Duties:
  • Leads the Practice Area in a local geographic market.
  • Serves as a successful PIC on civil engineering projects.
  • Serves as a mentor and resources to other Principals in a geographic market.
  • Competent, knowledgeable, service leader in the market(s) they service.
  • Promotes and engages in HZ's culture/morale, trainings, policies & procedures, and operations within the firm, and throughout the local community and industry.
  • Takes active steps in the pursuit of winning new business or additional opportunities with existing clients and is responsible for assigned portion of office/practice sales goal and individual sales goal (if applicable). Assists and/or leads team in pursuit of new work (repeat work, SOQ and Proposals). Develops and/or executes project Win strategy.
  • Understands and follows HZ QMS and Quality initiatives. Ensures quality control measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations within the office.
  • Understands, follows, and enforces Huitt-Zollars' business process including weekly rhythm.
  • Responsible for overall office target utilization, including facilitating workshare between practices and offices. Also, ensures proper staff is assigned to projects within the office.
  • Reviews project reports and performance metrics to track project progress and budget. Leads successful projects (profit, on-schedule, quality, satisfied client). Verifies client satisfaction routinely and shares feedback with team.
  • Proactively works with PM to strategize resolving issues that impact project performance. Reviews progress with PM at least monthly (including & completes vs. % spent) and that PM is adhering to weekly rhythm.
  • Successfully contributes to the overall profitability and financial performance on projects.
  • Oversees staff deliverables and production assigned to their projects to ensure client, legal, and company requirements are met.
  • Instill the corporate culture of Huitt-Zollars into the local office, lead by example, and serve as a role model.
  • Identify short and long-range new opportunities for the firm within the geographic market outside and/or in addition to the identified current markets being practiced in the office and stay informed of local economic trends.
  • Leads the Practice Area in a local geographic market.
  • Participate in local (non- specific to a particular practice area) business development activities, i.e. Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, etc.
  • Lead internal and external administrative communications.
  • Ensure all communications/deliverables are compliant with the Huitt-Zollars' Brand Identity Guide.
  • Enforce company policies in local office.

PEOPLE/HUMAN RESOURCES
  • Manage and oversee staff utilization to meet or exceed office's utilization goal.
  • Manage indirect labor activities (to include expenses) to benefit the firm.
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and guidance to PICs by mentoring and motivating staff on issues such as performance feedback, technical guidance, financial management, and client relations.
  • Facilitate local interviewing, hiring and terminations, training employees, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing issues/complaints, and resolving problems in close coordination with PICs and Practice Area Leaders (PALs).

PROJECT OVERSIGHT
  • Ensure responsible parties are undertaking appropriate action to collect ARs while documenting activities.
  • Review project close-outs and take appropriate corrective actions within the office to improve performance.

QUALITY
  • Ensure corporate quality management processes are implemented and followed throughout the office.
  • Prepare "Office Initiatives" and assure their successful completion.

ADMINISTRATIVE
  • Oversee administrative operations within the local office.
  • Evaluate needs and prepare capital requests necessary to support local resources.
  • Conduct operations and business development meetings at appropriate frequencies with PICs and PMs in office.

Qualifications for MP
  • Professional Licensed Engineer (PE)
  • Must currently be operating as a Principal in Charge, and will continue to operate as a PIC
  • Proven PIC performance - have excelled as an acting PIC within operations, sales, project teams
  • Commitment to being active within the community to foster and cultivate new/existing relationships
  • Proven track record of profitable, high-performing operations
  • Drive and influence a positive, engaging corporate culture
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Minimum 10 years A/E experience
  • Ability to influence effectively communicate both written and orally

Managing Principal (MP) Role Annual Performance Goals & Expectations:
  • Having a deep understanding of how your work and contributions as a co-owner add to Huitt-Zollars' mission and core values.
  • Maintaining expected Effective Labor Multiplier (ELM) on sum of all associated projects.
  • Ensure direct reports meet established utilization targets.
  • Consistently upholds business processes including timely monthly A/R's, invoicing, timekeeping, resource forecasting, percent completes, etc.
  • Achieves personal sales goal.
  • Achieves stated target personal utilization goal for MP.
  • Understands, follows and ensures quality control measures and risk management measures are being applied and adhered to projects and daily operations.

Annual Base Salary Range: $180,000-$210,000 and up depending on experience and qualifications of the selected candidate(s). The expected salary range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The final agreed upon compensation is based on the success candidate's individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and consideration to participate in our discretionary annual bonus incentive program.
