What is a prep cook?

A prep cook works in a restaurant or private kitchen, preparing ingredients for other chefs to cook. As a prep cook, your responsibilities center on simplifying the cooking process for everyone in the kitchen. Your duties include cleaning, peeling, chopping, cutting, slicing, and dicing vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, and other food. You are also responsible for maintaining health and safety standards in the kitchen, which is a responsibility of everyone on the staff. You need excellent knife skills to safely and quickly prepare food, and you need communication skills to follow instructions and collaborate with your coworkers. Experience working in a kitchen is helpful when you look for jobs as a prep cook, but a prep cook can sometimes be considered to be an entry-level position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a prep cook, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prep Cook, you need basic culinary skills, knowledge of food safety and sanitation, and experience with kitchen equipment, usually gained through on-the-job training or a culinary certificate. Familiarity with commercial kitchen tools such as slicers, mixers, and standardized recipes is common in this role. Strong attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are essential soft skills for handling multiple tasks efficiently. These abilities ensure high-quality food preparation, kitchen safety, and smooth operation during busy service periods.

What are some common challenges faced by prep cooks, and how can they be managed effectively?

Prep cooks often encounter challenges such as working in fast-paced environments, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintaining consistency in food preparation. To manage these effectively, it’s important to develop strong time-management skills, stay organized, and communicate clearly with other kitchen staff. Building stamina and adaptability will also help handle peak hours, and being attentive to detail ensures quality and food safety standards are consistently met.

ASAHI BEER USA | OCTOPI BREWING

LINE COOK / PREP COOK

Good Beer Deserves Good Food — That's Where You Come In

Taproom | Variable Schedule

ABOUT ASAHI BEER USA / OCTOPI BREWING

Founded in 2014 as a Wisconsin contract brewery, Octopi Brewing has spent over a decade brewing and packaging beer, seltzers, RTDs, and sodas for clients nationwide. In 2024, Asahi — brewers of Asahi Super Dry — acquired Octopi, making us the U.S. production home of Super Dry. Today, our 250+ person team of beverage industry pros keeps that same local, quality-first spirit alive at a state-of-the-art facility. Our Taproom brings that story to life for visitors — and our kitchen team makes sure the food is just as good as the beer.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We're looking for a Line Cook/Prep Cook to join our Taproom kitchen team, working alongside our Kitchen Manager to keep food coming out fresh, fast, and delicious for our taproom guests. The schedule varies week to week, so this is a great fit if you like some variety instead of the same shift every day.

WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE GREAT

• Hands-on kitchen experience in a lively taproom setting — not a big, anonymous kitchen

• Work directly alongside our Kitchen Manager, with room to learn and grow your cooking skills

• A schedule that varies week to week, offering some flexibility compared to a fixed daily grind

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Assist the Kitchen Manager with cooking and food prep for taproom service

• Prep ingredients and help maintain food quality and consistency

• Keep the kitchen clean and organized, including dishwashing

• Jump in wherever needed to keep service running smoothly

WHAT YOU BRING

Must-haves:

• High school diploma

• Comfortable standing for extended periods and able to lift up to 30 lbs

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Good communicator, comfortable taking feedback and direction

Nice-to-haves:

• Prior experience working a kitchen line

BENEFITS & PERKS

• 401(k) eligible after 3 months, with company match — 100% up to 3%, 50% on the next 2%

• 9 paid holidays (if they fall on your scheduled workday)

• A free beer after shift, because you earned it

PAY & SCHEDULE

• Pay: $19.00/hr]

• Schedule varies week to week — days and hours will be discussed during the interview process

• 15-25 hours/week

Requirements:

Compensation details: 19-19 Hourly Wage
