Job Title: ER Charge Nurse (RN) – Night Shift
Location: Arcata, California
Department: Emergency Department
Facility Size: 50–149 beds
Job Type: 13-week contract | Quick start
Schedule: Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM | 36 hours/week (guaranteed)

Position overview

The ER Charge Nurse leads night-shift operations in a busy emergency department, combining direct patient care with real-time leadership and coordination responsibilities. This role is ideal for experienced emergency nurses who are confident managing high-acuity patients, supervising staff, and optimizing patient flow in a community hospital setting.​

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated Charge Nurse for night shift, overseeing daily ED operations, staffing, and assignments.​

  • Provide direct patient care in a high-acuity emergency environment, including triage, stabilization, and ongoing management.​

  • Coordinate nurse and support staff assignments, break coverage, and patient flow from triage through disposition.​

  • Support, mentor, and guide ED nursing staff to ensure adherence to clinical protocols, policies, and standards of care.​

  • Collaborate closely with emergency physicians, hospitalists, ancillary departments, and prehospital providers to facilitate timely care.​

  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the CPSI/Evident EMR, including assessments, interventions, and disposition.​

  • Promote patient safety, quality metrics, and regulatory compliance throughout the shift, escalating issues as needed.​

Required qualifications

  • Active California RN license.​

  • Minimum 4 years of recent ER nursing experience in an acute care setting.​

  • Previous Charge Nurse or ED shift leader experience.​

  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.​

  • Proof of negative TB screen within 12 months of start date, per facility policy.​

  • Ability and willingness to work night shifts only for the duration of the assignment.​
