How much do preformulation jobs pay per hour?
What is a preformulation?
A Preformulation job involves studying the physical, chemical, and biological properties of drug compounds to guide formulation development. Scientists in this role assess solubility, stability, and compatibility with excipients to ensure the drug's efficacy and manufacturability. Their work helps optimize formulation strategies, reducing risks in later development stages. Preformulation specialists collaborate with analytical, formulation, and regulatory teams to support drug development from early research to clinical trials.
What are the typical responsibilities of a preformulation scientist in a pharmaceutical company?
Preformulation scientists are responsible for investigating and characterizing the physical and chemical properties of drug candidates to inform formulation strategies. They conduct experiments to assess solubility, stability, compatibility, and other key parameters, often collaborating closely with formulation development, analytical, and process engineering teams. Daily tasks may include designing experiments, analyzing data, preparing technical reports, and presenting findings in multidisciplinary meetings. This role is critical for de-risking the formulation process, ensuring optimal drug performance, and facilitating smooth project progression from preclinical through to clinical development.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the preformulation position, and why are they important?
To succeed in a Preformulation role, you need a solid foundation in pharmaceutical sciences, physical chemistry, and analytical techniques, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as pharmacy, chemistry, or pharmaceutical sciences). Experience with laboratory instrumentation like HPLC, DSC, and particle size analyzers, as well as familiarity with regulatory guidelines (e.g., ICH, FDA), is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills set outstanding candidates apart, as they frequently collaborate across R&D, formulation, and analytical teams. These competencies are vital because preformulation scientists lay the groundwork for successful drug development by characterizing compounds and anticipating formulation challenges early in the process.

Kymera is a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering the field of targeted protein degradation (TPD) to develop medicines that address critical health problems and have the potential to dramatically improve patients' lives. Kymera is deploying TPD to address disease targets and pathways inaccessible with conventional therapeutics. Having advanced the first degrader into the clinic for immunological diseases, Kymera is focused on building an industry-leading pipeline of oral small molecule degraders to provide a new generation of convenient, highly effective therapies for patients with these conditions. Founded in 2016, Kymera has been recognized as one of Boston's top workplaces for the past several years. For more information about our science, pipeline and people, please visitwww.kymeratx.com or follow us onX (formerly Twitter)orLinkedIn.
How we work:- PIONEER: We are courageous, resilient and rigorous in our mission to improve patients' lives through our revolutionary degrader medicines.
- COLLABORATE: We value trust + transparency from everyone. Our goals are shared, our decisions data-driven and our camaraderie genuine.
- BELONG: We recognize our differences, inviting curiosity and inclusivity, so that our people are valued, seen, and heard.
The Senior Director of Early Phase Formulation Development will provide scientific leadership for preformulation and early stage formulation activities across our portfolio of small molecule programs. This individual will serve as a hands-on scientific expert and team leader, driving enabling formulation strategies from candidate selection through early clinical development, with a focus on solving complex drug delivery and bioavailability challenges inherent to degrader molecules. The successful candidate will partner closely with Research, DMPK, and CMC functions to advance programs efficiently through IND and into early-stage clinical studies. This role requires deep scientific expertise in enabling formulation technologies, a strong track record in early-stage pharmaceutical development, and the ability to work collaboratively across functions in a fast-paced biotech environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead early formulation development activities across programs, providing scientific direction on preformulation characterization, enabling formulation strategies, and drug product design for preclinical and early clinical stages
- Apply deep scientific expertise in preformulation, biopharmaceutics, and enabling formulation technologies to support candidate progression decisions and advance programs from discovery through IND
- Drive innovation in enabling formulation technologies to address solubility and bioavailability challenges across the early pipeline
- Design and execute phase-appropriate formulation and drug product development strategies for preclinical toxicology studies and early clinical programs
- Provide scientific and technical guidance; coordinate with external CROs and CDMOs to execute early formulation and drug product programs
- Contribute to establishing phase-appropriate best practices, SOPs, and experimental frameworks for early formulation development activities
- Manage outsourced early formulation and drug product activities with CROs and CDMOs, ensuring scientific quality, timelines, and technical objectives are met
- Support CMC regulatory strategy for drug product development and contribute to preparation of drug product IND sections
- Ensure compliance with applicable GMP and regulatory requirements
- Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with 15+ years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, with a focus on early-stage formulation development
- Demonstrated scientific expertise in early-stage pharmaceutical development, with a track record of advancing small molecule programs from discovery through IND and into clinical development
- Strong understanding of preformulation, biopharmaceutics, formulation development, and oral solid dose drug product manufacturing for small molecules
- Deep expertise in formulation approaches for poorly soluble compounds, including application of enabling technologies to improve bioavailability and product performance
- Proven track record of advancing small molecule programs through IND, with hands-on expertise in preformulation characterization, enabling formulation development, and early clinical drug product design
- Strong knowledge of GMP requirements, regulatory expectations, and evolving industry trends
- Experience coordinating with external CROs and CDMOs to deliver formulation development objectives
- Strong scientific communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners
