Precision millwork refers to the custom fabrication of wood products, such as molding, cabinetry, trim, and architectural features, with a high degree of accuracy and detail. Professionals in precision millwork use specialized tools and techniques to create components that meet exact specifications for residential, commercial, or historical projects. This type of work requires careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and attention to detail to ensure that each piece fits perfectly and meets aesthetic standards.

What are some common challenges faced in a Precision Millwork role, and how can they be addressed?

Precision Millwork professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, adapting to custom design requirements, and working with a variety of materials. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, effective communication with designers and clients, and continuous learning of new tools and techniques. Collaboration with other team members, such as project managers and installers, is essential to ensure that the final product meets quality standards and client expectations. Regular training and staying updated with the latest industry technology can also help overcome these hurdles.

The ideal candidate understands the demands of custom millwork in luxury hospitality and commercial environments, where quality, detailing, and coordination are critical to success.

Key Responsibilities

Client & Project Leadership

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, designers, general contractors, and ownership teams.
  • Lead projects from handoff through completion, ensuring alignment with design intent, budgets, and schedules.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication with all stakeholders, documenting all critical decisions impacting scope, cost, or schedule.

Scope, Budget & Schedule Management

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of project scope, including custom fabrication requirements, materials, and finish specifications.
  • Manage project budgets, identify risks early, and drive cost control throughout the lifecycle.
  • Build and track detailed project schedules, including engineering, procurement, production, and installation milestones.

Preconstruction & Engineering Coordination

  • Oversee field verification, site conditions, and dimensional control to ensure accurate shop drawing development.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to translate complex design concepts into fully coordinated, buildable shop drawings.
  • Review and manage submittals, RFIs, and approvals with a focus on constructability and quality.

Custom Fabrication & Production Oversight

  • Monitor project progress through production, ensuring adherence to design intent, material selection, and finish standards.
  • Coordinate closely with production to address challenges specific to custom, one-off fabrication.
  • Ensure compliance with AWI standards and Millex’s internal quality benchmarks.

Installation Management

  • Coordinate installation schedules and site logistics with general contractors and field crews.
  • Conduct site visits as required to oversee installation quality, sequencing, and issue resolution.
  • Lead project kickoff meetings, site coordination, and punch list completion.

Change Management & Documentation

  • Manage RFIs, change orders, and scope adjustments with clear documentation and cost/schedule impact tracking.
  • Maintain organized project records, including all correspondence, approvals, and revisions.
  • Deliver complete and professional close-out packages.

Quality Control

  • Champion quality across all phases—from submittals to fabrication to final installation.
  • Ensure all finished products meet high-end hospitality standards and client expectations.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Project Management experience in custom architectural millwork, high-end casegoods, or specialty fabrication.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWI standards, construction documentation, and shop drawing processes.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, detail-driven projects in hospitality, multifamily, or commercial environments.
  • High level of attention to detail with an understanding of materials, finishes, and fabrication methods.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with project management or ERP systems is a plus.
  • Self-driven with strong problem-solving capabilities and a commitment to accountability.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as required to support project success.
