How much do precision machining jobs pay per hour?
What is precision machining?
A Precision Machining job involves operating specialized tools and equipment, such as lathes, mills, and CNC machines, to create highly accurate metal or plastic parts. Workers in this field interpret blueprints, set up machines, and ensure components meet tight tolerances. Precision machinists are essential in industries like aerospace, medical, and automotive manufacturing. Skills in measurement, programming, and machine maintenance are often required.
What does a precision machinist do?
In a Precision Machining role, your day typically involves setting up and operating various machining tools, interpreting technical drawings, and carefully measuring finished parts to ensure they meet exact specifications. You'll often work independently but will also collaborate with engineers, quality inspectors, and other team members to resolve issues and maintain workflow. Regular equipment maintenance and continual process improvements are also part of the routine. These tasks require a focus on safety, accuracy, and efficiency to support the production of high-quality components across industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical devices.
What skills and qualifications are needed for precision machining?
To thrive in Precision Machining, strong mathematical abilities, mechanical aptitude, and proficiency in reading technical blueprints are essential, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machines, manual lathes, milling machines, and industry-standard certifications such as NIMS are highly beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help machinists ensure quality and collaborate with team members. These competencies are vital because they ensure the production of high-precision components that meet strict industry standards and client requirements.

Work Schedule
This position works a third-shift schedule designed to support advanced manufacturing operations.
- Monday - Friday
- 2:30 pm - 11:30 pm
How You Will Help the TeamÂ
As an ATDM Precision Manufacturing Technician – CNC Machining, you’ll be a key part of keeping the training labs running smoothly day in and day out. Your work happens on the shop floor, sidebyside with instructors and students, making sure machines are set up correctly, tooling is ready, and labs stay on schedule.Â
You’ll help prepare CNC machines for handson training, support instructors during lab activities, and step in to troubleshoot issues as they come up. This role isn’t about standing back—it’s about being present, handson, and dependable. When the lab runs well, students learn better, instructors stay focused, and the program succeeds. Your work directly supports that outcome.Â
Every shift, you’ll help create a safe, organized, and professional shop environment where learning feels like realworld manufacturing—not a classroom simulation.Â
Your Knowledge & ExpertiseÂ
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Precision Machining Technology diploma or equivalent hands-on CNC experience.
- Experience setting up and operating CNC milling and/or turning equipment.
- Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T.
- Working knowledge of precision measuring tools.
- Strong focus on safety, teamwork, and reliability.
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office.
Your Schedule
ATDM Instructors and Technicians are assigned shifts based on training needs. Shift assignments are determined by business needs at the time of hiring and may change over time based on program demand, individual performance, and tenure. Your pay will include a shift differential based on the class times you are assigned to support. Typical hours for the roles are below:Â
- First shift: 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Second shift: 2:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.Â
- Third shift: 10:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.Â
What Makes Working Here DifferentATDM isn’t a production shop, and it isn’t a classroom—it’s something in between. The work is handson, fastpaced, and always changing. You won’t be making the same part every day. Instead, you’ll support a wide range of machining activities tied to realworld skills that students will use in advanced manufacturing careers.Â
The equipment is modern, the expectations are high, and safety and quality matter. You’ll work with people who know their trade, take pride in what they do, and understand the importance of showing up prepared and ready to help the team.
What makes this role different is the impact. The work you do helps train the next generation of skilled manufacturing workers—many of whom go on to support defense and advanced manufacturing industries. If you like steady work, good equipment, and knowing your skills are making a real difference, this is a place where that matters.
Equal Opportunity Employer We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status.Â
