What is precision machining?

A Precision Machining job involves operating specialized tools and equipment, such as lathes, mills, and CNC machines, to create highly accurate metal or plastic parts. Workers in this field interpret blueprints, set up machines, and ensure components meet tight tolerances. Precision machinists are essential in industries like aerospace, medical, and automotive manufacturing. Skills in measurement, programming, and machine maintenance are often required.

What does a precision machinist do?

In a Precision Machining role, your day typically involves setting up and operating various machining tools, interpreting technical drawings, and carefully measuring finished parts to ensure they meet exact specifications. You'll often work independently but will also collaborate with engineers, quality inspectors, and other team members to resolve issues and maintain workflow. Regular equipment maintenance and continual process improvements are also part of the routine. These tasks require a focus on safety, accuracy, and efficiency to support the production of high-quality components across industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical devices.

What skills and qualifications are needed for precision machining?

To thrive in Precision Machining, strong mathematical abilities, mechanical aptitude, and proficiency in reading technical blueprints are essential, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machines, manual lathes, milling machines, and industry-standard certifications such as NIMS are highly beneficial.
