Precision Advanced Machining information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in precision advanced machining, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Precision Advanced Machining often encounter challenges such as maintaining extremely tight tolerances, adapting to rapidly advancing technology, and ensuring quality control in high-pressure environments. To address these, machinists must stay updated on the latest CNC equipment and software, participate in ongoing training, and closely follow industry best practices for inspection and measurement. Collaborating with engineers and quality assurance teams also helps catch issues early and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in precision advanced machining?

To thrive in Precision Advanced Machining, you need expertise in blueprint reading, dimensional measurement, and material properties, often backed by a technical diploma or machining apprenticeship. Mastery of CNC machine operation, CAD/CAM software, and familiarity with quality control systems are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong teamwork skills help machinists excel in producing highly precise components. These competencies ensure the efficient production of complex parts to exact specifications, which is critical for industries like aerospace and medical device manufacturing.

What is the difference between Precision Advanced Machining vs CNC Machinist?

AspectPrecision Advanced MachiningCNC Machinist
CredentialsTechnical certifications, machining licensesTechnical certifications, CNC programming certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing shops, machine shopsManufacturing shops, machine shops
Industry UsageHigh-precision manufacturing, aerospace, medical devicesGeneral manufacturing, automotive, aerospace
Job FocusAdvanced machining techniques, complex part fabricationOperating CNC machines, programming, setup

Precision Advanced Machining involves specialized skills in high-precision fabrication and often requires advanced certifications. CNC Machinists focus on operating and programming CNC machines. Both roles are vital in manufacturing environments, but Precision Advanced Machining emphasizes complex, high-precision work, while CNC Machinists handle day-to-day machine operation and setup.

What is precision advanced machining?

Precision Advanced Machining refers to the use of specialized equipment and techniques to manufacture highly accurate and complex parts, often for industries such as aerospace, medical, and automotive. This process typically involves computer numerical control (CNC) machines, lasers, or other advanced tools to achieve tight tolerances and fine surface finishes. Skilled machinists or technicians program and operate these machines to create components from metal, plastic, or composite materials. The field demands strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of technical drawings and materials science.

Job description

RTCA is a precision aerospace and defense manufacturing group built on decades of hands-on machining expertise, with roots spanning more than 50 years. We support mission-critical commercial and government aerospace programs across North America through four U.S. Centers of Excellence operating as an integrated platform with 150+ CNC machines and a team of 250+ professionals.

Unlike large organizations where roles can be narrow, RTCA offers hands-on ownership and real visibility – you understand how your work supports the team, the operation, and the end customer. Our flat structure allows employees to take initiative, grow their skills, and have their contributions recognized, while still providing the stability, advanced technology, and meaningful work of an established aerospace manufacturer.

At RTCA, we believe in teamwork, excellence, and delivering with pride. One Team! One Mission!

How You’ll Make an Impact:

As a CNC Machinist at RTCA, you will play a key role in producing precision aerospace and defense components by performing machine setups, selecting tooling, loading programs, and ensuring parts meet engineering and quality specifications. Through accurate setups, process optimization, troubleshooting, and collaboration with Quality and Engineering teams, you will help drive operational efficiency, product quality, and continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.

What you’ll be doing as a CNC Machinist:

  • Working a full-time, onsite position at our Chatsworth, CA location. This position includes a shift differential of 11.11% of the offered base rate.
  • Operate and set up multiple machining centers and equipment
  • Perform machine setups, including tooling selection, fixture loading, and program loading.
  • Follow all company safety, quality, and aerospace manufacturing procedures, standards, and policies.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, setup sheets, travelers, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Conduct first article inspections and verify parts meet engineering specifications and quality standards.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to verify part conformance and maintain accurate quality documentation.
  • Make machine adjustments, offsets, and tooling changes to maintain machining quality and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and production issues to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Optimize machining processes, including feeds, speeds, tooling, and setup strategies, to improve performance and throughput.
  • Operate and support advanced machining equipment, including multi-axis machines.
  • Monitor machine performance and support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, and Operations teams to support production goals, tooling improvements, fixture development, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide technical support, training, and mentorship to machinists and machine operators as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications (Education, skills and experience):

  • Experience operating and/or setting up CNC or manual machining equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T requirements.
