Contract Cnc Programming information

What is contract CNC programming?

Contract CNC programming involves hiring a specialist or company on a contractual basis to create, optimize, or modify CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine code. These professionals develop programs that guide machines like mills, lathes, and routers to produce precise parts according to engineering drawings or CAD files. Contract CNC programmers are often brought in for specific projects, to handle overflow work, or to provide expertise in complex machining tasks. This flexible arrangement helps manufacturers access skilled programmers without committing to a full-time hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract CNC Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract CNC Programmer, you need strong proficiency in CNC machine operation, G-code programming, and a background in mechanical engineering or machining. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360, as well as knowledge of various CNC controllers, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure precise production and collaboration with manufacturing teams. These capabilities are crucial for delivering high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective machining solutions in a dynamic contract environment.

What is the difference between Contract Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectContract Cnc ProgrammingCnc Machinist
CredentialsTypically requires CNC programming certifications or experience with CAD/CAM softwareRequires CNC machine operation experience, often with certifications in machine operation
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based for programming, on-site for setup and testingPrimarily on the shop floor operating machines
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive for designing and programming partsUsed in manufacturing plants for producing parts directly on CNC machines

Contract Cnc Programmers focus on creating and optimizing CNC programs, often working remotely or on a project basis, while Cnc Machinists operate and set up CNC machines to produce parts. Both roles require technical skills, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by contract CNC programmers when joining new client projects?

Contract CNC programmers often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar machines, software, or shop floor processes used by different clients. They may need to rapidly interpret varying technical drawings and specifications, while also aligning with each shop's unique workflow and safety standards. Building rapport with permanent team members and understanding client expectations are crucial for delivering effective solutions on tight timelines. Flexibility, clear communication, and a solid foundation in CNC programming principles help contract professionals overcome these hurdles.

We are seeking an experienced, detail-orientedย CNC Programmerย to join ourย Manufacturingย team of our aerospace and defense manufacturing facility. This hybrid role emphasizes the CNC programming background but is an opportunity for an individual to build their career as a high-value Manufacturing Supervisor. This role is critical to the front-end acceptance of client requests and planning/implementation of machined part production, from quoting and router development to CNC programming and first article execution. Ideal candidates will bring experience in both precisionย CNC Programmingย andย Design For Manufacturabilityย principles, in launching new parts into production efficiently and compliantly. Proficiency in programming 4-5 Axis CNC machines is critical.
Opportunity
We are a contract manufacturer experiencing strong demand growth which we expect to continue for several years. This position offers an awesome opportunity for career development and progressive earning power.
Key Responsibilities:
CNC Programming & Setup

  • Working largely with new customer requests, program CNC mill and lathe operations using Mastercam (or Fusion 360), based on customer blueprints and 3D models.
  • Perform first article setups, dry runs, and edits to validate program accuracy and efficiency.
  • Conduct in-process inspections to verify dimensions during first article production runs.
  • Capable of training machine operators on setup sheets, fixturing, and safe operation of new programs.
  • As Necessary, assist in movement of materials through impacted work centers to ensure customer schedules are met, troubleshoot and address bottlenecked processes/operations.
  • Maintain revision control for CNC programs and tooling instructions.

Manufacturing Lead

  • Analyze customer blueprints, 3D models, and specifications to determine manufacturability and generate time/material estimates for quoting.
  • Develop/Update manufacturing router sequences, Bill of Materials, and Work Centers for new and existing product lines, determining estimated setup and cycle times to maintain an accurate ERP system.
  • Select tooling, fixturing, and machine allocation based on material and part geometry for the fabrication of machined parts using 2 to 5 axis lathes; 3 and 4 axis horizontal and vertical mills; as well as 5 axis mills and conventional machining equipment
  • Collaborate with Customer, Production and Quality teams to ensure DFM (Design for Manufacturability) ensures the most efficient manufacturing methods and techniques. AS9100 compliance.
  • Organize the machine shop, priorities and workflow to meet customer requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in aerospace CNC machining, with demonstrated expertise inย CNC programmingย andย setup.
  • Strong proficiency withย Mastercam, orย Fusion 360.
  • Deep understanding of G-code, GD&T, blueprint reading, and aerospace tolerancing.
  • Experience working inย AS9100/AS9102-regulated environments.
  • Proven ability to estimate machining time, material requirements, and tooling needs for quoting purposes.
  • Familiarity with various aerospace alloys (e.g., titanium, Inconel, stainless steel, aluminum).
  • This position requires use of information which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

  • Experience and Understanding of Master Routers (i.e. โ€œItem Masters, which require a Bill of Materials and Routing sequences for CNC operations) and/or the willingness/ability to learn.
  • Working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems (specifically Syteline, or JobBOSS, Epicor, ProShop).
  • First article inspection (FAI) process experience per AS9102.
  • Lean or Six Sigma training is a plus.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and machining knowledge
  • Ownership mindset and initiative in problem-solving
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with quality, operations, and sales teams
