Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner - Hospital Rounding
Part-Time (24 Hours per Week)
Location: Springfield, MA (Baystate Medical Center & NEOS Clinics)
Position Overview
New England Orthopedic Surgeons (NEOS) is seeking a compassionate and collaborative Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our orthopedic team in a part-time role focused on inpatient orthopedic care and pre-operative patient evaluations.
This 24-hour-per-week position is primarily responsible for rounding on hospitalized NEOS patients at Baystate Medical Center, ensuring continuity of care, coordinating with the orthopedic team, and facilitating safe patient recovery and discharge. In addition, the Nurse Practitioner will perform pre-operative history and physical (H&P) examinations for surgical patients in the outpatient clinic.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced Nurse Practitioner seeking a consistent part-time schedule while working closely with a highly specialized orthopedic team.
This position does not include first assisting in surgery or maintaining an independent patient clinic.
Essential Responsibilities
Hospital Responsibilities
  • Round daily on hospitalized NEOS orthopedic patients at Baystate Medical Center.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and monitor post-operative recovery and inpatient progress.
  • Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons to develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Coordinate patient care with nursing staff, physical and occupational therapists, case management, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Assist with discharge planning to ensure safe and timely transitions of care.
  • Respond to inpatient clinical questions and concerns.
  • Carry the hospital pager during assigned coverage and serve as the primary Nurse Practitioner for inpatient orthopedic services.
Outpatient Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive pre-operative history and physical (H&P) examinations for surgical patients.
  • Review medical histories, medications, allergies, and diagnostic testing to ensure surgical readiness.
  • Order and review appropriate pre-operative laboratory and diagnostic studies as indicated.
  • Educate patients regarding surgery preparation and post-operative expectations.
  • Document patient encounters accurately and efficiently within the electronic medical record (EMR).
Qualifications
  • Master's or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner license in good standing.
  • National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (or ability to obtain).
  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
  • Previous experience in orthopedics, surgery, hospital medicine, acute care, or a related specialty preferred.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary orthopedic team.
