The Clinical Trainee position at Hively is a structured, year-long practicum experience within a well-established and growing agency serving individuals and families throughout Alameda County. Trainees gain hands-on experience providing services across the lifespan, including early childhood, while receiving consistent supervision and clinical mentorship from licensed clinicians. This practicum position is ideal for candidates who are committed to providing high-quality therapeutic care to a diverse population, including those presenting with moderate to severe clinical needs. 

This is a volunteer internship opportunity for students currently enrolled in an eligible Master's degree program pursuing MFT or PCC licensure. Trainees provide individual, family, couples, and group counseling services and receive one hour of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision weekly.

This program is designed for students completing practicum hours and requires a full academic-year commitment.

What you will do:
  • Provide direct psychotherapy services to an assigned caseload, including individual, family, couples, and group counseling
  • Conduct assessments, treatment planning, and ongoing clinical interventions
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly supervision and apply feedback to clinical work
  • Collaborate with supervisors and interdisciplinary staff to support client care
  • Coordinate with practicum advisors, professors, and academic programs to ensure alignment with training requirements
  • Participate in agency trainings and professional development opportunities
  • Interact with clients and staff in a professional, ethical, and culturally responsive manner
  • Support general agency operations and complete additional duties as needed
What you should bring:
  • Master's Degree in progress from an accredited college or university in related field
  • Availability to commit to 20-22 hours per week and report to the Hively Oakland site to complete practicum hours
  • Reliability and time management skills, including the ability to maintain consistent attendance and meet program expectations throughout the year
  • Foundational knowledge of counseling practices and the ability to apply clinical theory in a supervised setting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to complete clinical documentation
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain professional, therapeutic relationships
  • Professionalism, accountability, and openness to feedback
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in crisis situations with appropriate supervision
  • Ability to travel to meetings, campuses, or service sites as needed
  • Successful completion of a background check
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Fluent in English and one or more of the following languages (Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Urdu, Punjabi or Hindi)
Program Requirements

This is a structured training program designed to support timely completion of practicum hours and development of clinical competencies. Trainees are expected to:

  • Maintain active coordination and communication with your academic program, including practicum advisors and faculty, to ensure all school and agency requirements are met throughout the duration of the placement
  • Commit to the full program duration without interruption
  • Maintain consistent weekly participation of 20-22 hours per week throughout the practicum
  • Ensure availability aligns with program scheduling timelines, with placement details finalized prior to program start
  • Adhere to attendance expectations, with no more than six (6) total weeks of absence during the practicum, inclusive of school breaks, agency holidays, and sick time
The Clinical Trainee position is a volunteer internship opportunity to provide clinical professional services under supervision of a Licensed Clinician, and requires applicants to be currently enrolled in an eligible Master's Degree Program.
