Practicum Intern information

What is a practicum intern?

Practicum interns are students or recent graduates who participate in supervised, hands-on work experiences as part of their academic training. These internships, often required in fields like psychology, education, or healthcare, allow interns to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings while gaining practical skills. Practicum interns typically work under the guidance of experienced professionals and may be evaluated for academic credit or professional certification. The experience helps them build confidence, develop competencies, and prepare for future employment in their chosen field.

What types of projects or responsibilities can a practicum intern expect to handle during their placement?

As a Practicum Intern, you'll typically be assigned hands-on projects and tasks that align with your academic background and career interests. These may include assisting with research, supporting ongoing projects, attending team meetings, and collaborating with staff on day-to-day operations. The specific responsibilities often vary by organization, but you can expect a mix of supervised independent work and team-based assignments designed to build your practical skills. Regular feedback and mentorship are common, helping you gain valuable professional experience and prepare for future roles in your field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a practicum intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Practicum Intern, you need foundational knowledge in your field of study, strong academic standing, and often enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with industry-specific software, data entry systems, or research tools is commonly required depending on the internship focus. Initiative, reliability, and strong communication skills help you stand out and build professional relationships. These skills and qualities are essential for effectively learning on the job, contributing to team projects, and preparing for future professional roles.

Job description

Build Your Skills. Find Your Purpose. Launch Your Career.

At CHC Addiction Services, we believe the best way to learn is by doing. That's why our internship program provides meaningful, hands-on experience alongside experienced professionals who are passionate about helping the next generation of behavioral health leaders succeed.

For more than 50 years, CHC has been serving the Akron community by providing compassionate, evidence-based treatment and recovery services for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders. As an intern, you'll become part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to changing lives through hope, healing, and recovery.

Whether you're completing your first practicum or preparing for graduation, CHC offers an internship experience that combines real-world learning, professional mentorship, and meaningful client interaction.

Internship Opportunities

We offer paid and unpaid internship opportunities throughout the year, with placements available primarily within our Counseling Department for Bachelor's and Master's level students.

Depending on your educational program and placement, interns may gain experience in:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Client assessments and treatment planning
  • Case management and care coordination
  • Recovery-oriented care and support services
  • Clinical documentation and electronic health records
  • Professional ethics, confidentiality, and compliance
  • Collaboration within a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Community resources and referral services

Every internship is designed to provide practical experience while helping students develop confidence, professionalism, and clinical skills.

Learn from Experienced Professionals

At CHC, interns don't spend their days observing from the sidelines.

You'll receive guidance and mentorship from experienced counselors, social workers, peer supporters, nurses, case managers, and clinical leaders who are invested in your success. Our goal is to provide an engaging learning environment where questions are encouraged, professional growth is supported, and every experience helps prepare you for your future career.

Experience the Full Continuum of Care

One of the unique advantages of interning at CHC is the opportunity to learn about the many services we provide throughout our organization.

Depending on your placement, you may gain exposure to programs such as:

  • Outpatient counseling services
  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
  • Residential treatment programs
  • Recovery housing
  • Peer recovery support services
  • Case management and community-based services
  • Prevention and recovery support programming

This broad exposure helps interns better understand the continuum of addiction treatment and recovery while working alongside professionals from a variety of disciplines.

Why Choose CHC?

Students consistently tell us they appreciate the opportunity to:

  • Gain meaningful, hands-on experience
  • Work directly with experienced clinicians and recovery professionals
  • Receive mentorship throughout their internship
  • Build confidence in a supportive learning environment
  • Develop professional skills that prepare them for employment
  • Make a positive impact in the lives of individuals and families in recovery

Many of our interns choose to begin their careers with CHC after graduation—a reflection of the relationships they build and the experience they gain during their internship.

Interested in Another Area?

While most internship opportunities are available within our Counseling Department, we're always open to exploring placements in other areas of the organization.
