Job description

The Sr. Associate Director of Donor Relations will play an integral role in devising and executing stewardship, donor relations, and volunteer engagement strategies. This includes programmatic leadership, the writing and designing of personalized donor impact reports, the development of volunteer engagement and board development strategies, and creating other complex special stewardship and engagement opportunities for donors to and volunteers for Johns Hopkins. As a leader and subject matter expert, the Sr. Associate Director may advise leaders on the best tools and strategies for engaging and inspiring donors and volunteers and facilitating the impact of philanthropy and volunteerism on the Institution. The Sr. Associate Director will partner with Development Office (DOFF) leaders in providing strategic and tactical stewardship and engagement guidance.
The Department of Medicine -- the largest department within Johns Hopkins Medicine -- includes more than 650 full-time faculty across 18 academic divisions and over 3,000 staff members. Each year, our faculty delivers exceptional care through more than 390,000 clinic visits and over 25,000 inpatient discharges at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Our clinical footprint extends well beyond these hospitals, with locations serving patients across the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan region. Complementing our clinical mission, the department sustains a robust research enterprise with more than $200 million in annual funding, driving discoveries that transform medicine and improve lives. This position reports to the Executive Director of Development. The Senior Associate Director of Donor Relations plays a strategic role in shaping and executing a comprehensive donor stewardship and volunteer engagement program that reflects the scale and impact of the Department of Medicine and its affiliated initiatives, including the Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM).
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the DOFF leader to drive strategy for comprehensive stewardship and donor relations efforts that align with the overall vision of the unit and/or Institution. Build and manage both programming and personalized touches to strengthen relationships with, engage and retain donors, grateful patients and/or alumni by expressing gratitude, showing the impact of gifts, and increasing giving.
  • Collaborate with DOFF leaders to drive strategy for comprehensive engagement of volunteers at all points in the engagement journey, including maximizing engagement of board and council members across the institution and serving as a source for best practices.
  • Develop and launch a volunteer recognition program.
  • Develop strategies for institutional-level volunteer events that are inclusive of volunteers across the organization, elevate the role of volunteers at Johns Hopkins, and serve to enhance their affinity and effectiveness.
  • Independently design and produce high-quality stewardship deliverables. Create strong partnerships with faculty and administrative leaders to ensure accuracy and authenticity of deliverables and impact reports.
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of institutional volunteer communications strategy, including but not limited to online communications and campaign newsletters.
  • Proactively identify gaps and opportunities with top priority donor and volunteer relationships and bring strategies to fundraisers, engagement officers, and relationship managers.
  • Utilize the donor database (CRM) in daily work, including updating individual records, pulling reports, and interpreting dashboards and data.
  • Collaborate with central teams and other departments on shared donor and volunteer relationships.
  • Remain updated about industry best practices and routinely suggest new ways to implement and push the field forward as appropriate
  • Lead the creation and implementation of high-impact donor and volunteer engagement initiatives in collaboration with leaders and fundraisers.
  • May work with or manage donor or volunteer relationships in a non-fundraising capacity. May staff or support the work of advisory boards and/or volunteer bodies.
  • Build out and manage reporting calendars and practices for the tracking and stewardship of different types of giving and impact, including endowments.
  • Facilitate and translate institutional impact and research by adapting and customizing information for individual donors and volunteers, boards and councils, and audiences.
  • Write complex reports and coach faculty about the utilization of endowed funds according to donor intent.
  • May be responsible for leading the work and/or the coaching and mentorship of other staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties described above, the Sr. Associate Director of Donor Relations will:
  • Lead a comprehensive stewardship and donor relations strategy for the Department of Medicine and the Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM), aligned with institutional priorities and major principal gift efforts, especially for CIM and Rheumatology.
  • Advise senior leaders and faculty on best practices, tools, and strategies to engage and inspire donors and volunteers; support stewardship events, leadership briefings, and training.
  • Partner closely with department and CIM leadership (including the Chair and CIM Director) to retain and grow top philanthropic relationships and align strategies with emerging research priorities and opportunities.
  • Manage CIM operations related to philanthropy, including serving as a key advisor to the CIM Director; oversee the CIM Request for Applications process; track pledges and reminders; and develop educational materials for faculty.
  • Advance institutional engagement and communications by contributing to marketing content (screens, websites, publications), writing philanthropy stories for broader placement, staffing the CIM International Advisory Board, and participating in institutional committees/working groups.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of related professional experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in communications, marketing, non-profit management or a related field.
  • Graphic design and report design experience.
  • Project management experience and/or certification.
  • Experience working directly with donors and/or volunteers.
  • Experience in higher education or an academic medical center.
