This role has an onsite presence expectation of at least three days per week in Baltimore.
The Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations provides strategic leadership to advance and implement all fundraising and alumni relations strategies, short- and long-term, and activities to carry forward the mission and vision of BSPH. Reporting to the Dean of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University's Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, this leadership position works closely with the Dean, the BSPH senior leadership team, and senior leaders within Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations, and is responsible for all fundraising and alumni engagement activities in support of the mission and vision of the School. The Associate Dean is a member of the senior leadership team of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and also serves on the University Development Leadership Group. They partner closely with the Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing as joint leaders of the Office of External Affairs (OEA), aligning school-based stakeholder engagement, fundraising, and events with communications, marketing, and branding to build on and sustain the excellence of the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
This role involves overseeing strategic partnerships with internal BSPH leaders and external donors that enhance research, teaching, and policy impact. Moreover, this position is responsible for driving strategy for the school's top donors and volunteers, acting as a close partner to the Dean on her direct fundraising and a key advisor on the role of philanthropy in advancing the mission of the school. The Associate Dean will lead a robust team of seasoned professionals responsible for raising $75 million+ in philanthropy each year, overseeing all aspects of development (inclusive of private philanthropy and corporate relations program), alumni relations, and constituent engagement.
The Associate Dean works closely with colleagues across the institution to harness collaborative fundraising opportunities across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. This position is required to build exceptional partnerships across the institution in deepening the impact of shared priorities, initiatives, and donor relationships.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Development Strategy, Execution and Team Leadership
  • Develop and lead effective philanthropic fundraising strategies as required to obtain, maintain and grow funding support for the School's priorities from individuals, alumni, corporations, non-profit partners and philanthropic foundations with a focus on increasing philanthropy from individual donors and alumni to support the balance of faculty-driven awards.
  • Build new revenue strategies and identify opportunities for private sector funding growth to BSPH, including management of the Director of Corporate Relations within the OEA, which goes beyond philanthropy to seek corporate resources and requires close partnership with the departments, faculty, and Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) to position BSPH to grow the corporate portfolio overall (e.g., consulting/technical assistance, corporate-funded research, executive education).
  • Define and lead a comprehensive and dynamic alumni relations strategy, reconsidering effective ways to engage the School's worldwide alumni network, in partnership with the central Office of Alumni Relations, to maximize resources across the University.
  • Oversee the development, management and composition of volunteer board and committees, primarily the Health Advisory Board (HAB), leveraging board members as both donors and strategic partners in identifying and cultivating prospects.
  • Increase, diversify, and sustain philanthropic revenue by defining and elevating philanthropic priorities across the school. Serve as a strategic convener and partnership architect, facilitating meaningful collaborations between donors, corporate partners, foundations, and faculty that advance both philanthropic and academic objectives. This may include innovative and previously unexplored sources of philanthropy and will require a growth mindset around the evolving nature of supporting the research and academic endeavors of the BSPH.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of leadership and principal gift prospects, with a focus on the $1M+ level, using effective partnerships with the Dean, the faculty, and the central development offices. Lead the overall prospect management, donor strategy development, and solicitation activities for the School, and include targeted, strategic domestic and international travel in support of strengthening these relationships.
  • Partner with the Dean to align fundraising goals with the School's strategic priorities resulting from the BSPH Strategic Plan.
  • As part of the University's comprehensive fundraising campaign, partner with the Dean to further codify her strategic vision within the framework of the campaign priorities, identify top prospective donors for the campaign, and build strategies to engage potential donors in support of achieving fundraising and engagement metrics in this campaign, which is expected to launch into the public phase in Fall 2026.
  • Revise and implement the fundraising campaign for the South Building capital project, already underway, and set the course to achieve fundraising targets in alignment with the school's budget.
  • Manage BSPH development and alumni relations teams, recruiting and retaining talented leaders and promising contributors to the overall goals and ambitions of the School. Navigate institutional changes with poise and stability to ensure the team continues to meet ambitious goals within an ever-changing environment.
  • Work in close partnership with the Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing on OEA team collaboration, external affairs priorities, shared operations/project management, and team culture. This includes identifying and marshaling resources to support opportunities for collaboration across disciplines, such as alumni communications, development communications, cross-over communications, and alumni/donor engagement.

Bloomberg School of Public Health Leadership
  • Serve on the Dean's leadership team, working closely with BSPH leaders and faculty to define and achieve goals and priorities that advance public health.
  • In partnership with the BSPH budget office, oversee development budget planning and reporting accordingly, including a focus on long-term, multi-year fundraising plans in support of BSPH.
  • Establish effective working relationships with department and program chairs, faculty, and staff to understand their programs and priorities, and increase internal stakeholder participation in external relations initiatives to align activities with the BSPH mission, vision, and values. Provide coaching, counsel, and prioritization to faculty and academic leaders as to philanthropic interest, engagement, and stewardship.
  • Represent the Dean and the BSPH to both external and Johns Hopkins audiences, clearly articulating the Dean's vision and priorities.
  • Leverage and position the Dean in initiating, deepening, and stewarding donor and volunteer relationships, both in the United States and internationally, as appropriate.
  • Drive a high-capacity, high-impact engagement strategy for the Dean with external constituents, including alumni, donors and potential partners, to build external enthusiasm for and engagement with the vision, mission, and leadership of the school.

Institutional Navigation and Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) Leadership
  • Work closely with JHU's Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) leadership, including the Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, Associate Dean colleagues, and Executive/Senior Directors of Development in the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine on shared trustee and donor relationships. Lead and facilitate compelling stewardship and impact reporting for shared donor relationships as relationship management requires. Drive ongoing accountability and responsiveness to institutional and donor requests, fostering a high standard of service and partnership with donors and constituents.
  • Work closely with the Office of Principal Gifts to cultivate, solicit, and steward transformational-level giving on behalf of BSPH. Adapt between relationship management, proposal development, and internal liaison roles as necessary to advance giving opportunities at the $50M+ level.
  • As a leader within DAR, build partnerships with central programs, leveraging all resources and efficiencies in new tools, technology, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Work closely with leadership across DAR to ensure consistency and ambition in goal-setting, portfolio management, organizational culture, and staff development. Align and navigate distinctions in DAR and BSPH team building, local policies, and culture.

Other Duties as Assigned
  • Serve on and lead staff task forces, committees, and action groups as necessary.
  • Promote a professional workplace culture of mutual respect, collegiality, and collaboration for all members and affiliates of the institution.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree.
  • 15 or more years of progressively responsible development leadership experience; strong preference for five + years of experience in development leadership in a complex higher education environment.
  • 10 years of direct fundraising experience with a proven ability to close seven- and eight-figure gifts;
  • 10 years of experience in supervision, including a minimum of five years managing leaders of teams.
  • This is a position in which there is an expectation of frequent travel, domestic and international, as well as staffing for evening and weekend events.

  • Aptitude in understanding and articulating academic goals and school priorities while working collaboratively with academic leadership, faculty, students, alumni, and volunteers to both understand the areas of opportunity and proactively engage in philanthropic conversations when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and engaging advisory boards and volunteer leadership.
  • Ability to recruit, mentor, and manage development professionals and administrative staff, while also ensuring a comprehensive programmatic strategy is articulated for the office and the dean of the school.
