What is a PPD scientist?

PPD Scientists are professionals who work in Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD), focusing on research, development, and testing of new drugs and therapies. They are involved in designing studies, analyzing data, and ensuring that products meet regulatory and quality standards. PPD Scientists play a critical role in bringing safe and effective pharmaceutical products to market, collaborating with clinicians, regulatory specialists, and manufacturing teams throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PPD scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PPD Scientist, you need a strong background in analytical chemistry, biology, or a related scientific field, typically supported by a relevant degree and laboratory experience. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation (such as HPLC, GC, and mass spectrometry), data analysis software, and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., GMP, GLP) is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set successful candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate data generation, compliance with industry regulations, and efficient collaboration within product development teams.

What are some typical challenges a PPD scientist faces when working on new pharmaceutical formulations?

A PPD Scientist often encounters challenges such as optimizing formulations for stability and efficacy while meeting regulatory requirements and tight project timelines. Balancing the need for innovative solutions with cost-effectiveness is also common, as is troubleshooting unexpected results during analytical or scale-up phases. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including analytical chemists, regulatory affairs, and manufacturing, is essential to address these obstacles efficiently and ensure successful product development.

Location: New York, NY (10 Hudson Yards)
Division: Professional Products Division (PPD)
Reports To: AVP, Digital Content PPD
Employment Type: Full-Time
Who We Are:
For more than a century, L'Oréal has devoted its energy, innovation, and scientific excellence solely to one business: Beauty. Our goal is to offer each and every person around the world the best of beauty in terms of quality, efficacy, safety, sincerity and responsibility to satisfy all beauty needs and desires in their infinite diversity.
About L'Oréal PPD & The US Content Center
With the salon and its professionals as the foundation of all we do, L'Oreal Professional Products Division is comprised of iconic salon color and retail brands including: Redken, Kerastase, L'Oreal Professionnel, Pureology, Matrix, Biolage, Mizani, Pulp Riot, and Shu Uemura.
The PPD US Content Center is a fast-paced, highly collaborative hub of creative excellence. We are responsible for bringing our brands' stories to life across all digital and social touchpoints, ensuring our content is social-first, highly engaging, and tailored to the unique communities of both stylists and consumers.
What You Will Learn:
We are seeking a visionary, highly tapped-in, and editorial-minded Director of Creative Social Production to join the PPD US Content Center. This role sits at the intersection of pop culture, social trend-jacking, and high-velocity digital production.
The ideal candidate lives and breathes social media, possessing an innate sense of what is bubbling up on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and emerging platforms. You will partner closely with our portfolio of PPD Brands and Content Production Managers to ideate, plan, pitch, and produce end-to-end, social-first creative assets. From rapid-response organic trend execution to building premium, repeatable owned social series, you will help define how our brands show up and engage on social-first channels.
With a robust background in editorial-style production, you know how to build a content calendar that tells a cohesive story, pitches compelling concepts to brand stakeholders, and executes production seamlessly from pre-to-post, all while adhering to industry-leading social best practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Social-First Editorial Strategy & Ideation
  • Pop Culture & Trend Monitoring: Serve as the "eyes and ears" of the division, continuously monitoring social conversations, viral audio, cultural moments, and industry trends to identify instant opportunities for our brands. Responsible for keeping division up-to-date on algorithm changes, new platforms, and what's winning in organic social.
  • Creative Pitching: Proactively ideate and pitch end-to-end, multi-platform social series, franchises, and standalone campaigns to Brand Teams and Content Leaders.
  • Editorial Programming: Translate brand priorities into highly engaging, repeatable, and episodic social programming that builds long-term community loyalty.

2. End-to-End Creative Production
  • Agile Content Creation: Lead the swift production of rapid-response, organic social assets through net-new production or clipping to capitalize on real-time trends before they fade.
  • Series & Franchise Execution: Oversee the end-to-end physical and digital production (planning, scripting, storyboarding, shooting, and editing) of original, social-first video series.
  • Collaboration with Production Managers: Work hand-in-hand with Content Production Managers to streamline workflows, budget efficiently, manage crew/creatives, and ensure all output meets PPD's high aesthetic standards.
  • Social Best Practices: Ensure 100% of produced content is optimized for platform-specific behaviors (e.g., dynamic hook styling, natural pacing, precise framing, accessible captioning, and correct asset specs).

3. Brand Partnership & Collaboration
  • Strategic Advisory: Act as a trusted creative consultant to individual PPD Brand Teams, helping them translate traditional brand codes into authentic, owned social expressions.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Foster highly collaborative relationships with Brand Marketing, Advocacy/Influencer, Education, and Media teams to ensure social content supports broader omni-channel campaigns.

Qualifications, Requirements & Experience
  • Experience: 10 years of professional experience in editorial production, social media creation, or digital journalism. Previous experience working within a creative agency, digital publisher, or a highly active consumer brand team is required.
  • Social Series Portfolio: A proven track record of pitching, planning, and producing highly successful, end-to-end social series/franchises. Please be prepared to share portfolio links.
  • Editorial Mindset: Strong background in structuring content calendars, developing programmatic formats, and managing continuous content pipelines.
  • Technical Literacy: Proficient in mobile/social shooting techniques (lighting, framing, and audio) and mobile editing tools. Deep understanding of native platform tools and algorithms.
  • Pop Culture Savvy: Deep personal passion for beauty, hair, and pop and social internet culture. You are quick to understand why things go viral and how to responsibly translate those trends for corporate brand safety.
  • Work Style: Exceptionally self-motivated and comfortable operating with high autonomy, yet fundamentally collaborative and open to feedback. Excellent presentation and communication skills to successfully pitch and sell creative ideas to stakeholders.
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis is required. No immigration support/sponsorship offered for this role.
