What is power electronics?

Power electronics is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with the conversion, control, and management of electrical power using electronic devices. It involves the use of components such as diodes, transistors, and thyristors to efficiently convert and control electric power in applications like motor drives, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and power supplies. Professionals in this field design circuits and systems that enable the efficient transfer and transformation of electrical energy for various industrial and consumer applications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a power electronics engineer?

To thrive as a Power Electronics Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and power conversion principles, generally supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PCB design software, and relevant industry certifications (such as PE or IEEE membership) is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, efficient, and reliable power systems in various high-impact industries.

What are common challenges faced by power electronics engineers in project development?

Power electronics engineers often encounter challenges such as managing thermal issues, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility, and optimizing circuit efficiency while meeting strict size and weight requirements. Collaborating with cross-functional teams like mechanical design, firmware, and quality assurance is essential to address these challenges. Staying updated with the latest semiconductor technologies and safety standards also plays a critical role in successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Power Electronics vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectPower ElectronicsElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like IEEE are commonRequires a degree in electrical engineering; professional licensure may be preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing electronic circuits, working in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning electrical systems, working in offices, labs, or construction sites
Industry UsageFocused on power conversion, control systems, renewable energy, and electronicsBroader role covering power, control, communication, and instrumentation systems

Power Electronics specialists focus on designing and developing electronic devices that control and convert electrical power, often working with circuits and systems specific to power management. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, working on various electrical systems and infrastructure. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, Power Electronics professionals typically specialize further in electronic power conversion technologies.

Is power electronics a good career?

Power electronics is a specialized field involving the design and application of electronic devices that control and convert electrical power. It offers opportunities in industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and industrial automation, often requiring knowledge of circuit design, control systems, and certifications like IEEE standards. The field is expected to grow with technological advancements and increasing demand for energy-efficient solutions.

Job description

Summary
Where dreams and reality collide and the output is out of this world! At Redwire Space, we are a team of dreamers and doers. Where the impossible becomes possible, and every day is an opportunity to learn and get one step closer to knowing the unknown. Join us on our mission to expand humanity's presence in space.
Through continuous innovation and operational excellence our team in Littleton, CO are using their engineering talents to design and deploy Power Distribution, Embedded Monitoring and Control, Power Conversion, and Camera based solutions. These cutting-edge capabilities are helping to revolutionize space flight. With many more exciting projects on the horizon, our team could use your curiosity, passion, talent and experience to help us Build Above!
Redwire Space Missions in Littleton, CO has an exciting opportunity for an Electronics Test Engineer (all senior levels). We are seeking an experienced Electronics Test Engineer to lead the bring-up, functional and design verification testing of spacecraft power electronics boards. This role is highly hands-on and requires a methodical troubleshooter who can work beyond strict test procedures, identify root cause of anomalies, and collaborate closely with design engineers. This position focuses exclusively on board-level testing.
Responsibilities
  • Perform board-level bring-up, functional and design verification testing on spacecraft power electronics boards.
  • Methodically troubleshoot issues using schematics, layouts, component data, and design intent.
  • Analyze anomalies and drive root-cause identification (component failures, layout concerns, firmware interface issues, power sequencing errors, etc.).
  • Use bench instrumentation to validate power rails, heater drivers, analog front ends, digital interfaces, and protection circuits.
  • Execute tests in situations where procedures are evolving; develop and refine test steps as required.
  • Document findings clearly and provide actionable feedback to design engineering teams.
  • Support failure analysis, corrective actions, and re-testing as needed.
  • Collaborate with software, systems, manufacturing, and other functional teams to ensure design maturity and production readiness.

Ideal Experience
  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 8+ years of hands-on experience testing and troubleshooting complex electronic PCBs.
  • Proven ability to isolate and diagnose hardware issues down to component-level root cause.
  • Direct experience testing power electronics (e.g., DC/DC converters, power sequencing, protection circuits).
  • Strong familiarity with standard bench instrumentation (oscilloscopes, SMUs, electronic loads, DMMs, power analyzers).
  • Comfortable working onsite in a lab environment with flight hardware.
  • Experience working with SMPS, Load Switches, Op-Amps and Comparators.
  • Experience with FPGA, microcontroller, or microprocessor-based control and telemetry interfaces.
  • Ability to travel as needed, up to 10% on average.

Desired Skills
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong proficiency interpreting and working directly from schematics and board layouts.
  • Ability to work with incomplete test documentation and adapt procedures during bring-up.
  • Experience testing or bringing up spacecraft power modules (PCU, PDU, BMS/BCPM, heater drivers) or similar flight-class power systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise troubleshooting high-reliability power electronics, including nuanced failure modes (e.g., control-loop instability, sequencing transients, marginal component derating).
  • Experience diagnosing complex mixed-signal interactions, such as analog front-end drift, ADC sampling artifacts, logic-level timing collisions, or firmware handshake issues.
  • Ability to assess and validate protection circuitry behavior under edge cases: current-limit foldback, soft-start anomalies, OV/UV trigger thresholds, fault-latching logic.
  • Strong capability in identifying latent design defects (not just overt failures), including component tolerance stacking, thermal coupling issues, or layout-induced noise paths.
  • Knowledge of EMI/EMC design practices and grounding/shielding techniques.
  • Experience methodically troubleshooting and resolving issues and anomalies in accordance with root cause corrective action (RCCA) process.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with design engineering to refine schematics, update component selections, or propose design corrections based on board-level findings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to generate clear design documentation and review materials.
  • Ability to distill complex technical data into digestible presentation material for customers and executive leadership.

Don't meet every single requirement above? No worries. We want people who can grow, collaborate and build a stronger team. We strive to build a diverse and inclusive culture, so if you're excited about this job posting, we encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
