What is a power electronics software firmware engineer?

Power Electronics Software Firmware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain the embedded software and firmware that control power electronic devices such as inverters, converters, and motor drives. They work at the intersection of hardware and software, ensuring that the firmware optimally manages power flow, efficiency, and safety. Their responsibilities often include writing code for microcontrollers or digital signal processors, testing and debugging embedded systems, and collaborating with hardware engineers to integrate and validate system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a power electronics software firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Power Electronics Software Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, power electronics theory, and typically a degree in electrical, electronics, or computer engineering. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), circuit simulation tools, and debugging hardware like oscilloscopes is essential, alongside relevant certifications such as IEEE or IPC. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the development of reliable, efficient embedded firmware that meets safety, regulatory, and performance standards in power electronics applications.

What are some common challenges faced by power electronics software firmware engineers when integrating firmware with hardware systems?

Power Electronics Software Firmware Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless communication between firmware and complex hardware components, managing timing and synchronization issues, and debugging real-time control algorithms. Working closely with hardware engineers is essential to identify and resolve issues like signal integrity, noise, and hardware compatibility. Additionally, thorough testing and validation are required to guarantee the reliability and safety of power electronics systems, especially in high-stakes applications like automotive or industrial automation.

What is the difference between Power Electronics Software Firmware Engineer vs Power Systems Engineer?

AspectPower Electronics Software Firmware EngineerPower Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in embedded systems or firmwareBachelor's or Master's in Electrical or Power Engineering, often with system analysis certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning firmware for power electronic devices, embedded systems, hardware-software integrationAnalyzing power grids, system planning, and large-scale electrical infrastructure
Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, renewable energy, consumer electronicsUtilities, energy companies, infrastructure projects

While both roles involve electrical engineering expertise, the Power Electronics Software Firmware Engineer focuses on developing firmware for electronic power devices, whereas the Power Systems Engineer works on large-scale electrical systems and grid management. They share foundational electrical knowledge but differ in application and environment.

Job description

Electric Hydrogen's mission is to decarbonize our world! Our outstanding people deliver creative decarbonization energy solutions to our customers.
We are seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer to develop real-time firmware for our power electronics products as well as auxiliary (non-power) electronics. This role will work across the full embedded development lifecycle, from board bring-up and driver development through control algorithm implementation and system communications.
This position will work closely with electrical, power electronics, controls, and systems engineering teams to develop reliable embedded solutions for Electric Hydrogen's products.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and debug low-level, real-time, low-latency firmware in C
  • Perform board bring-up, debugging, testing, and code optimization
  • Develop and maintain device drivers and hardware interfaces
  • Implement control algorithms for power electronics products and auxiliary electronics
  • Design and implement protocols for system communications
  • Troubleshoot firmware and hardware interactions using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment
  • Write and maintain software specifications, design documentation, and technical documentation
  • Collaborate with electrical, power electronics, controls, and systems engineers throughout product development and testing

Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • For mid-level candidates, 3+ years of professional firmware or embedded software development experience; strong academic, project, or internship experience in embedded systems will be considered for junior-level candidates
  • Experience developing low-level embedded firmware in C
  • Experience with embedded systems development tools, including compilers, debuggers, and IDEs
  • Experience with version control and issue-tracking tools such as Git and Jira
  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, and Ethernet
  • Experience developing device drivers using hardware interfaces such as ADC, GPIO, PWM, UART, SPI, and I2C
  • Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and similar laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of automated build systems is a plus
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation of power electronics control loops is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of Linux environments is a plus, particularly for development toolchains, GUIs, build systems, logging, and testing tools
