Poultry Catcher information

What does a poultry catcher do?

A poultry catcher is responsible for safely gathering live poultry, such as chickens or turkeys, from farms or barns and preparing them for transport to processing facilities. This job often involves working in teams to catch birds by hand, ensuring their welfare and minimizing stress or injury. Poultry catchers must follow strict animal welfare guidelines and use proper handling techniques. The role can be physically demanding and often takes place during early mornings or late nights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a poultry catcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Poultry Catcher, you need physical stamina, manual dexterity, and an understanding of basic animal handling, typically gained through on-the-job training. Familiarity with biosecurity procedures, proper use of catching equipment, and adherence to animal welfare standards are essential. Good teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under time constraints are standout soft skills. These attributes are important to ensure animal welfare, worker safety, and efficient operations during the catching and transport process.

What are some common challenges faced by poultry catchers, and how can they be managed on the job?

Poultry catchers often work in fast-paced environments where handling live birds quickly and safely is essential. Common challenges include managing the physical demands of repetitive lifting, working in varying temperatures, and ensuring animal welfare during the catching process. To address these, catchers receive training on proper handling techniques, use protective equipment, and work as part of a team to distribute workloads efficiently. Clear communication and adherence to safety protocols are key to minimizing stress and injury for both workers and poultry.
