Work Location: Scott Airforce Base, Belleville, Illinois
Reporting Hours: Onsite M-F, Central Standard Time
Clearance: Active DoD Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain Top Secret or TS/SCI
Travel: < 20%
Geocgi is seeking an experienced GIS Database Administrator that specializes in PostgreSQL and Oracle database management to support geospatial data systems critical to Air Force missions. The GDBA is responsible for maintaining the integrity, performance, and security of geospatial databases, with a focus on implementing Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) quarterly. The role also includes leading efforts to migrate Oracle databases to PostgreSQL, ensuring compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) standards. This position's location is at U.S. Scott Air Force Base in Illinois (St. Louis area- Belleville, Illinois).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Database Management:
    • Design, develop, and maintain PostgreSQL databases with PostGIS extensions for geospatial data.
    • Administer Oracle databases and ensure compatibility and interoperability with existing systems.
    • Manage database configurations, indexing, and optimization for performance and scalability.
    • Lead migration efforts from Oracle to PostgreSQL, including planning, execution, and post-migration support.

    Geospatial Data Administration:
    • Work with Data Manager to develop and execute complex spatial queries and scripts to support mission needs.
    • Ensure geospatial databases comply with metadata standards, such as FGDC or ISO 19115.

    Migration Expertise:
    • Conduct assessments of existing Oracle databases and develop migration strategies.
    • Create tools and scripts to automate data migration processes between Oracle and PostgreSQL.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve data compatibility and performance issues during migrations.

    System and Security Administration:
    • Ensure compliance with Air Force cybersecurity and data security standards.
    • Perform database backups, disaster recovery planning, and regular system updates.
    • Work closely with analysts, engineers, and IT teams to align geospatial systems with operational goals.

    STIG Implementation and Security Compliance:
    • Apply, configure, and validate Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) quarterly to ensure database systems meet DoD cybersecurity requirements.
    • Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, risk analysis, and mitigation for PostgreSQL and Oracle databases.
    • Document and report compliance statuses and remediation efforts.
    • Collaborate with security teams to address findings from security audits and inspections.

The following are requirements of the GIS Database Administrator:
  • US Citizen with a Secret Clearance or ability to obtain and maintain.
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Equivalent experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL with experience in database design and performance tuning.
  • Proficiency in Oracle database administration, with experience supporting geospatial data.
  • Demonstrated experience migrating Oracle databases to PostgreSQL, including resolving compatibility issues.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining STIG compliance for databases.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL, PL/pgSQL, or PL/SQL) for data processing.
  • Expertise in geospatial data standards, formats, and models.
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale database migrations and optimize geospatial data workflows.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot database issues effectively.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for cross-team efforts.

The following are preferred GIS Database Administrator:
  • CompTIA Security+ Certification.
  • Advanced knowledge of PostGIS, with experience in database design and performance tuning.
  • Relevant certifications such as PostgreSQL Certified Developer or Oracle Certified Professional are a plus.
  • Understanding of Air Force operations and geospatial requirements is preferred.
  • Security certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP are advantageous.

The annual base salary range for this position is anticipated to be $68,000 - $82,000 USD. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position.
