Purpose
The Space and Geophysics Laboratory (SGL) is seeking a senior PostgreSQL database administrator. The candidate will be responsible for building, testing and maintaining database backends to include performance monitoring, troubleshooting, backup and optimization in an enterprise Linux environment.
Responsibilities
  • Build, test and maintain complex databases.
  • Database security, protection and data validation.
  • Monitor database loading and performance, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Database backup, validation and recovery.
  • Assist development efforts requiring database access.
  • Generate database usage reports for growth planning.
  • Interface with development team members regarding application requirements and database programming best practices.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering or a related field.
  • Five years developing and maintaining complex PostgreSQL databases.
  • Strong Linux administration skills as they relate to the role of a database administrator.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and fix database errors, analyze database performance and make performance improvement recommendations.
  • Must currently hold, or be able to obtain within the first six months of employment, a DoD 8140 compliant security certification (e.g., Security+).
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Applicant must have a dynamic skill set, willing to work with new technologies, be highly organized and capable of planning and coordinating multiple tasks and managing their time. The position will require attention to detail, effective problem solving skills and excellent judgment. Ability to work independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member without daily supervision and effectively communicate with all groups of clients. Able to work under pressure and accept supervision. Regular and punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight or more years' experience developing and maintaining complex PostgreSQL databases.
  • Front end database application development experience.
  • Experience managing databases and related infrastructure in the cloud.
  • Experience migrating databases from on-prem to the cloud.
