How much do postdoctoral position separation science jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral position separation science in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical collaborative opportunities available to postdoctoral researchers in separation science?

Postdoctoral researchers in separation science often collaborate extensively with interdisciplinary teams, including chemists, engineers, and data scientists, both within their institution and with external partners. These collaborations may involve joint research projects, co-authoring publications, and working with industry partners on applied problems. Such teamwork not only enhances the quality of research but also helps postdocs build a professional network, gain exposure to diverse methodologies, and open doors to future academic or industry roles.

What is a postdoctoral position in separation science?

A postdoctoral position in separation science is a temporary research role, typically undertaken after earning a PhD, that focuses on studying and developing advanced methods for separating chemical or biological mixtures. Researchers in this field work on projects involving chromatography, mass spectrometry, membrane technology, or other separation techniques, often in academic or industrial labs. These positions allow scientists to deepen their expertise, contribute to innovative research, and prepare for independent careers in academia, industry, or government.

What is the difference between Postdoctoral Position Separation Science vs Postdoctoral Position Analytical Chemistry?

AspectPostdoctoral Position Separation SciencePostdoctoral Position Analytical Chemistry
Required CredentialsPh.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fieldPh.D. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch laboratories focused on separation techniques like chromatography and electrophoresisLaboratories emphasizing analytical methods, instrumentation, and sample analysis
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies

Postdoctoral Position Separation Science and Postdoctoral Position Analytical Chemistry both require a Ph.D. in a related field and involve research in laboratory settings. Separation Science focuses on developing and applying techniques to separate chemical mixtures, while Analytical Chemistry emphasizes analyzing samples to identify and quantify components. Both roles are common in academia and industry, often overlapping but with distinct research focuses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Separation Science, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Postdoctoral Position in Separation Science, you need a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, with a solid background in analytical or separation techniques. Familiarity with advanced instrumentation such as HPLC, GC, mass spectrometry, and relevant data analysis software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are highly valued. These competencies are crucial for conducting high-quality research, publishing results, and contributing to advancements in separation science.

Title
Open Postdoctoral Position
School
Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area
Rowland Institute at Harvard
Position Description
Applicants are now being considered for a postdoctoral position in the Gozzi Lab at the Rowland Institute at Harvard (https://www.rowland.harvard.edu/). Our lab's primary focus is on bacterial-encoded domesticated viruses, known as gene transfer agents, that package random sections of the host genome for use in genetic exchange. These virus-like entities are non-infectious and cannot replicate themselves, but are able to transduce random sections of the genome within a population. We aim to characterize gene transfer agent diversity, regulation and species-specificity across the Tree of Life. For further information on the lab, please visit: www.gozzilab.org
More broadly, bacteria constantly face a life-and-death struggle against lethal stresses in their microscopic world. We study how microbes adapt to their ever-changing environment, using simple and complex survival strategies. We hope to deeply understand how bacteria react and respond to stress and use this knowledge to engineer useful functions in bacteria.
We invite applications from postdoctoral candidates with backgrounds in microbiology and molecular biology. Applicants will benefit directly from the interdisciplinary core facilities at the Rowland Institute at Harvard and will be encouraged to participate in the Harvard and Boston scientific community. Harvard University postdocs are offered competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits packages.
Basic Qualifications
We invite applications from postdoctoral candidates with backgrounds in microbiology and molecular biology. Ideally, the candidate will have experience with bacterial husbandry, cloning, genetics, microscopy/biological imaging and/or protein biochemistry. A strong publication record in microbiology/molecular biology demonstrating these skills is highly preferred. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with a background in bioinformatics.
Additional Qualifications
Special Instructions
To apply, please send the following to kgozzi@fas.harvard.edu:
