What is a postdoctoral position in redox biology?

A Postdoctoral Position in Redox Biology is a temporary research role for individuals who have recently completed their PhD and wish to further their expertise in redox biology. These positions focus on studying the mechanisms and effects of oxidation-reduction (redox) processes in biological systems. Postdocs in this field typically conduct experiments, analyze data, publish scientific papers, and collaborate with other researchers. The goal is to deepen their research skills, contribute to scientific understanding, and prepare for independent careers in academia, industry, or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postdoctoral researcher in redox biology?

To thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Redox Biology, you need a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field, with a strong background in redox signaling and oxidative stress. Expertise in laboratory techniques such as Western blotting, mass spectrometry, and cell culture, as well as familiarity with data analysis software and scientific writing, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills for advancing research and publishing findings. These skills and qualifications are essential to drive independent research, contribute novel insights, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers in a postdoctoral position in redox biology, and how can they be addressed?

Postdoctoral researchers in Redox Biology often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex experimental protocols, managing large data sets, and staying current with rapidly evolving literature. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including biochemists, molecular biologists, and clinicians—is essential for successful project outcomes. To address these challenges, postdocs should prioritize strong communication, seek mentorship within their lab or institution, and actively participate in journal clubs or seminars to keep their knowledge up to date. Balancing independent research with team efforts can also provide valuable learning opportunities and foster professional growth.

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Bumsoo Ahn at Wake Forest University School of Medicine to investigate mitochondrial bioenergetics and muscle adaptation in models of aging and cancer. The fellow will lead a line of research examining how interventions that modulate mitochondrial bioenergetics influence muscle performance, energetic reserve, and physiological responses to stress. Projects will integrate cell culture, in vivo mouse models, functional phenotyping, and mechanistic bioenergetic analyses, with flexibility to pursue emerging directions as new findings arise. This position offers strong opportunities for first-author publications and provides structured mentorship toward competitive career development funding within a collaborative and translational research environment focused on aging and muscle biology.
Basic Qualifications
  • Applicants with no more than two years' experience after completing a PhD in physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, cancer biology, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in cell culture, mouse handling, microdissections, and molecular biology techniques (i.e., qRT-PCR, western blot and imaging)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will:
  • Design and implement interventions that modulate mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox balance, including voluntary wheel running and ghrelin administration via osmotic pump.
  • Conduct cell culture, rodent behavioral and functional assessments, including motor and cognitive testing.
  • Perform mitochondrial bioenergetic assessments using Seahorse Bioscience or Oroboros O2k high resolution respirometry
  • Coordinate redox and proteomic analyses.
  • Analyze and interpret data in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation and grant development.

Research Environment
The Ahn laboratory conducts mechanistic and translational research focused on mitochondrial bioenergetics, redox signaling, aging, and resilience. The fellow will work within a collaborative environment that includes clinical oncologists, behavioral neuroscientists, proteomics experts, and biostatisticians. The position offers strong mentorship in experimental design, high-impact publication strategy, and NIH career development pathways.
Application Instructions
Interested candidates should submit the following documents to bumsoo.ahn@wfusm.edu:
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Brief statement of research interests and career goals
  • Contact information for three references
