The mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is to enhance the career and life success of students, staff, faculty, and veterinary professionals through initiatives in curriculum and lifelong learning, development of leadership and entrepreneurial skills, and partnerships with the community. College programs in animal health and wellness improve animal and human health and well-being, and contribute to the economy of North Carolina and beyond through education, research (bio-medical discovery), service, extension and engagement.
The Dean's Office is the lead administrative unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, one of only 30 veterinary colleges in the United States and the only program of its kind in North Carolina. The College is a professional school that is responsible for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) professional, postdoctoral and graduate training/education, and postgraduate education, as well as responsible for the oversight of extensive research programs and clinical services.
The CVM Business Office provides the fiscal management for the College and is responsible for personnel and programmatic analysis planning and reporting.
It is the responsibility of the Business Office to provide efficient, effective service and problem resolution while maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the fiscal operations of the College. Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Dean for Business and Finance at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a high-level executive role responsible for large and complex financial portfolios. The CVM operates at the intersection of academic excellence, groundbreaking biomedical research, cutting-edge animal healthcare, and sophisticated facility management.
This position transcends traditional financial oversight, requiring a leader capable of navigating the intricate interplay between a mission-driven academic and research environment and the dynamic, revenue-generating operations of a premier teaching hospital. The Assistant Dean serves as a strategic partner to college leadership, ensuring that financial resources are optimized to support research, education, and world-class clinical care.
Primary Responsibilities
Integrated Financial Management & Clinical Operations
Manage contract terms, revenue-sharing models, and operational implementation to ensure mutual success. Oversee financial collaborations with major external industry partners.
Design and manage specialized clinical faculty compensation structures that blend clinical faculty salaries, research grants, and "practice plan" income, requiring a strong understanding of clinical compensation models and regulatory compliance to ensure fairness and adherence to best practices.
Direct the financial lifecycle of clinical trials and research, ensuring strict adherence to NIH, USDA, and sponsor-specific regulatory requirements.
Develop sophisticated financial models to manage resources between the college, the teaching hospital, and academic departments, providing precise reporting for audits and internal management.
Oversee capital investments and revenue-cycle management for specialized hospital IT systems and diagnostic lab platforms.
Oversees accounting teams to ensure the best financial practices are unified across the college.
Facilities Management & Capital Planning
Directly supervise the Site Director and oversees a varied physical plant, including the teaching hospitals and a fully functional dairy.
Serve as the lead financial liaison for major capital improvements. Coordinate with legislative liaisons, construction teams, and university investment directors.
Manage the lifecycle, maintenance, and replacement of highly specialized medical equipment (imaging, surgical suites) equivalent to human hospital standards, ensuring compliance with state and donor regulations.
Act as the primary financial liaison to the NC Veterinary Medical Foundation NCVMF. Oversee trust fund authority for hundreds of restricted funds, manage year-end closeouts, and collaborate with Foundations Accounting and Investments (FAI) on long-term endowments.
Lead the collection and analysis of critical data (patient care, student/employee metrics, and multi-source revenue) required for maintaining standing with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges.

Minimum Education and Experience
Master's degree in accounting or business administration preferred or bachelor's degree and minimum seven years of equivalent business related experience.

-Proven ability to motivate, lead, and manage cross-functional teams in a high-stakes, results-oriented environment.
-Ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for administrators, faculty, and external stakeholders.
-Experience leading large-scale organizational changes and multi-million dollar capital renovation projects.
-Familiarity with healthcare industry trends, clinical compensation, and the unique operational demands of a teaching hospital.
-A track record of exercising sound judgment and maintaining high ethical standards when navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
-Strong team building skills to ensure sustainable services and strategy.
-Strong communication skills including written and verbal communications.
