How much do postdoctoral math jobs pay per year?
What are the typical responsibilities and daily activities of a Postdoctoral Math researcher?
A Postdoctoral Math researcher typically conducts original research, develops mathematical models or proofs, and prepares findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Daily activities may include performing literature reviews, collaborating with team members, attending seminars, and mentoring graduate or undergraduate students. Postdocs often present their research at conferences, contribute to grant proposals, and participate in departmental meetings or interdisciplinary projects. This role offers valuable opportunities to deepen research expertise, expand professional networks, and prepare for faculty or advanced industry positions.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Postdoctoral Math position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Postdoctoral Math researcher, you need an advanced degree (Ph.D.) in mathematics or a related field, with a strong record of independent research and publication. Experience with specialized mathematical software (such as MATLAB, Mathematica, or Python libraries), advanced data analysis tools, and sometimes familiarity with grant writing systems is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and collaborative skills are crucial for success in academic or research environments. These competencies enable you to contribute innovative ideas, work effectively within research teams, and drive impactful scientific discoveries.
What is a Postdoctoral Math job?
A Postdoctoral Math job is a temporary research position for individuals who have recently earned a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field. It typically involves conducting independent or collaborative research, publishing papers, and sometimes teaching courses. These positions are designed to help early-career researchers develop their expertise, expand their academic network, and prepare for permanent positions in academia, industry, or government. Postdocs usually last for one to three years and are often funded by universities, research institutes, or grants.

Department SummaryThe College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills to address real-world challenges. CAS staff and managers are integral to this work, playing vital roles in supporting academic excellence and advancing the mission of both the College and the University.
The Department of Mathematics is a diverse and growing department with strengths in Algebraic Geometry, Analysis, Combinatorics, Differential Geometry, Mathematical Biology, Number Theory, Representation Theory, Topology, and Probability. The department has a thriving Ph.D. program that attracts students from across the globe and offers positions with close faculty interaction and active research communities.
The RTG (Research Training Group) Postdoctoral Scholar is a temporary, grant-funded position partially funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant entitled "RTG: Combinatorics, Geometry, Representation Theory, and Topology" at the University of Oregon. Applicants should be in research areas connected to one of these four fields. Based upon available funding, this position may have a teaching load of up to 3 courses per year, which range from standard subjects like calculus or linear algebra, to other more advanced subjects, depending on the needs of the department and the interest and instructional expertise of the scholar. The expectation is that this position will teach one course per term. To acquire additional professional skills needed to pursue a career path in the chosen research field, this position will also have a formal mentoring plan. The scholar will work directly with their faculty advisor to build on prior research projects and/or develop new projects in their field.
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month funding-contingent position for a postdoctoral faculty member (not tenure related) in the Department of Mathematics. This position is intended to start September 16, 2026, and end June 15, 2027. The position is non-renewable.
More information about the RTG grant, including a list of affiliated faculty members, can be found here:https://pages.uoregon.edu/ddugger/UOrtg.html.
