Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department's primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 40 Tenured-Tenure Track / 9 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 22 Fixed Term / 4 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 111 Adjuncts, 32 EHRA Non-Faculty, 20 Postdocs, 23 SHRA (Staff), 25 SHRA Temporary and 94 Students. The department's operating budget is 27 million a year.
Position Summary
Successful candidates will join the Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics (ACCIDDA) on a project aimed at developing software and analytic tools to perform disease modeling and critical analytics in response to infectious disease outbreaks. ACCIDDA is part of the newly formed CDC-funded national network of centers of excellence for outbreak analytics and disease modeling, named Insight Net. This position's efforts will focus on developing predictive and analytic models of infectious disease and will use dynamic models and/or machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms. Projects may also include work focused on the analysis of spatial and geographic data and work extrapolating results to different spatial scales. This position will collaborate with a network of scientists and public health practitioners to develop solutions to problems that have direct impacts on population health. Work with this center will provide numerous opportunities to work with other Insight Net centers and public health partners, as well as have a direct impact on the work of the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics.
