What are some typical collaborative projects a Postdoc in Biomaterials might participate in, and how does this collaboration shape daily work?

As a Postdoc in Biomaterials, you will often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including chemists, engineers, clinicians, and industry partners. These collaborations frequently involve joint research projects, such as developing novel biomaterials for medical devices or working on translational research to bring lab discoveries closer to clinical application. Daily work may include coordinating experiments, sharing data, co-authoring publications, and attending team meetings to align on project goals. This collaborative environment not only broadens your technical expertise but also helps build a professional network, which can be valuable for future career advancement.

What are postdoc biomaterials positions?

Postdoc biomaterials positions are research-focused roles typically held after completing a Ph.D. in a related field. These positions involve conducting advanced research on biomaterials—materials designed to interact with biological systems for medical applications, such as implants, tissue engineering, or drug delivery systems. Postdoctoral researchers in biomaterials work in academic, government, or industry labs to develop new materials, analyze their properties, and publish findings. The role also often includes mentoring students, applying for research funding, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Postdoc Biomaterials vs Postdoc Tissue Engineering?

AspectPostdoc BiomaterialsPostdoc Tissue Engineering
Required CredentialsPhD in Biomaterials, Materials Science, BioengineeringPhD in Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering
Work EnvironmentResearch labs focused on material development, biomaterial synthesis, and characterizationResearch labs focused on cell culture, scaffold design, and regenerative medicine
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutes, biotech companies in biomaterials and medical device sectorsUniversities, research institutes, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering companies

While both roles involve advanced research in biomedical fields, Postdoc Biomaterials primarily focuses on developing and characterizing biomaterials, whereas Postdoc Tissue Engineering emphasizes creating biological constructs for tissue regeneration. Both positions require similar credentials and often overlap in research settings, but their specific focus areas differ within the biomedical industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Biomaterials, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postdoc in Biomaterials, you need advanced knowledge in materials science, chemistry, and biology, typically supported by a PhD in a related field. Experience with laboratory techniques, analytical instruments (such as SEM, TEM, or spectroscopy), and familiarity with data analysis software are common requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective scientific communication help you excel in research teams and present findings. These skills are crucial for driving innovation, publishing impactful research, and advancing biomaterials science.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Ozbolat Laboratoryin Penn State's College of Engineering has multiple openings for Postdoctoral Scholars in the field of bioprinting, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The successful candidates will work on multiple projects funded through National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private foundations.

The Postdoctoral Scholars will join a multidisciplinary research laboratory at the Millenium Science Complex, which is part of Huck Institute of Life Sciences. There are excellent opportunities to interact and collaborate with other researchers in the Institute, as well as others established at Penn State who specialize in biomaterials, tissue engineering, stem cells, regenerative therapies, and clinical translation.

A Ph.D. degree in the field of biomedical engineering, molecular/cellular/developmentalbiology, chemistry, or a closely related field is required by the start date. The successful candidates will have a strong background in a range of molecular biology techniques, 2D and 3D cell culture models (hydrogels), imaging techniques (TEM, SEM, confocal), protein analysis (immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence), and handling of rodents. Specific skills in bioprinting and lab-on-a-chip device development, as well as high throughput tissue bio-fabrication, will be advantageous.

This is a term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with a possibility of renewal.Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three referees.
