Employer & IndustryRetail, hospitality, and payment processing companiesRetail stores, restaurants, and service providers

Pos Programmers focus on developing, customizing, and maintaining POS software systems, often working in an office environment. POS Technicians handle hardware setup, repairs, and troubleshooting at client sites. While both roles support POS systems, their skills and daily tasks differ significantly, with programmers emphasizing software and technicians focusing on hardware.

What are POS Programmers?

POS Programmers are specialized software developers who create, maintain, and troubleshoot point-of-sale (POS) systems used by businesses to process sales transactions. They work with both hardware and software components, ensuring the POS systems run smoothly, securely, and efficiently. Their responsibilities often include integrating payment gateways, updating software for new features or compliance requirements, and resolving technical issues as they arise. POS Programmers play a vital role in retail, hospitality, and other industries that rely on seamless transaction processing.

What are some common challenges faced by a POS Programmer when integrating new payment methods into existing systems?

As a POS Programmer, one common challenge is ensuring compatibility between new payment technologies and legacy point-of-sale systems. Integrating features like mobile wallets or contactless payments often requires updating both software and hardware interfaces. Additionally, maintaining data security and compliance with standards such as PCI DSS can add complexity to the integration process. Collaboration with QA testers, security specialists, and support teams is essential to ensure smooth rollouts and minimal disruption to business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a POS Programmer, and why are they important?

To succeed as a POS Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Java, or Python, and a solid understanding of point-of-sale systems and software development. Experience with POS platforms (like NCR, Oracle Micros, or Square), database management, and relevant certifications (such as CompTIA or vendor-specific credentials) are often required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and troubleshoot issues efficiently. These competencies ensure seamless POS system performance, reliable transaction processing, and continuous business operations.

Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager to lead the end-to-end delivery of global Point-of-Sale (POS) platform initiatives, from strategy and solution planning through engineering execution, deployment, and operational readiness. This role will partner closely with Engineering, Product, Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Payments, and Retail Operations to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable POS capabilities across global markets.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience delivering enterprise retail technology platforms, understands modern distributed systems and payment ecosystems, and can effectively lead large, cross-functional technical programs with multiple dependencies.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end delivery of global POS modernization initiatives from planning through production deployment and post-launch stabilization.
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering to define program scope, technical roadmap, milestones, and delivery strategy.
  • Drive alignment across Architecture, Engineering, Security, Infrastructure, QA, Operations, and business stakeholders.
  • Lead technical program planning including dependency management, release sequencing, and implementation readiness.
  • Coordinate API integrations, payment services, hardware integration, cloud services, and enterprise platform dependencies.
  • Identify technical risks, architectural constraints, scalability concerns, and mitigation strategies.
  • Drive governance across multiple engineering teams while removing delivery blockers.
  • Oversee global deployment planning, cutover activities, production readiness reviews, and hypercare support.
  • Monitor program health using engineering and delivery metrics including velocity, release quality, reliability, and operational KPIs.
  • Ensure alignment with security, compliance, PCI, and operational standards.
  • Manage vendor and implementation partner engagement where applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years leading complex technical programs.
  • Experience delivering enterprise POS, retail, or omnichannel commerce platforms.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, cloud platforms, integrations, and payment ecosystems.
  • Experience working directly with engineering and architecture teams throughout the SDLC.
  • Demonstrated success leading global technical implementations from concept through production.
  • Strong executive communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with Agile and hybrid software delivery models.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Global POS deployment experience.
  • Knowledge of PCI DSS, payment processing, and retail operations.
  • Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • PMP, PgMP, Scrum, or SAFe certification.
