Job Description

Aviation & Missile Solutions, LLC. (AMS) is seeking a talented Software Developer with a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline to join our diverse team, in Huntsville, AL., to create unique solutions for complex problems. AMS provides responsive, cost-effective engineering and scientific solutions ranging from air and missile defense technologies, command and control, radar systems, seekers, modeling & simulation, and prototype hardware development and testing.

Position Description:

The Software Engineer performing this role will support the architectural modernization, porting, and ongoing development of the Composite Tracking and Classification (CTC) product line under the Cloud-Based Command and Control (CBC2) initiative.

In this role, the candidate will support transforming legacy C++ software components into a modular, cross-platform, high-performance architecture. The candidate will refactor Windows-specific implementations into generic, containerized code, design modern CMake build systems, and optimize highly threaded, distributed messaging pipelines. Working with minimal documentation and sparse runtime feedback, the candidate will analyze complex software behaviors, lead code modularization efforts, and lay the technical foundation for next-generation distributed tracking architectures.

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Architecture Modernization & Cross-Platform Porting: Refactor and convert legacy Windows-specific C++ code into clean, platform-agnostic C++20 modules. Containerize applications using Docker to support modern deployment pipelines and distributed environments.

  • High-Performance C++ Development: Design and optimize highly concurrent, multi-threaded C++20 applications for target tracking, state estimation, and data fusion pipelines.

  • Distributed Messaging & Network Interfaces: Maintain and extend network messaging interfaces, implementing schema and message definitions across distributed node architectures.

  • Build System Engineering: Architect, clean up, and manage CMake build configurations to streamline multi-target builds and cross-platform compilation.

  • Independent Problem Solving & Debugging: Diagnose, trace, and resolve complex software defects independently, leveraging static code analysis and conceptual trace debugging in environments with limited documentation or restricted execution capabilities.

  • Future Capability R&D: Collaborate with software leads and system architects to design and prototype next-generation distributed tracker paradigms to expand the CTC product capabilities.

Location:

  • Huntsville, AL

  • Position is full-time in the office.

Experience and Skills

Basic Qualifications (required):

  • Advanced proficiency in Modern C++ (C++17/C++20), object-oriented design, and highly concurrent, multi-threaded programming techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience refactoring and porting platform-dependent code (e.g., Windows/Win32 APIs) to generic, cross-platform implementations.

  • Hands-on experience designing and maintaining CMake build systems for modular C++ projects.

  • Experience with distributed messaging frameworks, socket-level networking, and structured/binary message protocol definitions.

  • Proven ability to analyze, trace, and debug complex codebases independently with minimal documentation or limited direct feedback.

  • Development experience using Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code.

  • United States Citizenship.

  • Resident of the Huntsville, AL area or be willing to relocate.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Good people skills and the desire to work with a highly technical team of engineers and scientists.

    • Experience containerizing C++ applications using Docker or Podman for microservices/distributed deployments.

    • Foundational understanding or domain exposure to target tracking concepts, composite tracking, sensor fusion, state estimation (e.g., Kalman filtering), or classification algorithms.

    • Experience designing modular, decoupled library architectures for high-throughput, real-time data processing.

    • Familiarity with CI/CD build pipelines and automated test frameworks.

    • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline from ABET accredited university.

  • 7+ years of relevant software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 5+ years of relevant experience with a Master's degree in a STEM field.

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the year.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on computers, monitors, and development workstations.

  • Must be able to lift and move standard computer hardware and lab equipment up to 20 lbs during lab configuration or equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to perform duties in standard office, closed-area facility, and software integration laboratory environments.

Security Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Candidate must be a US only citizen.

  • Clearance level: possess (and be able to maintain) a DoD SECRET Clearance or meet the eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a DoD SECRET SECRET Clearance.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
