Bus Drivers

Portage Public Schools **SIGN-ON BONUS AVAILABLE**. Effective July 1, 2025 the starting wage for all road-ready school bus drivers is $21.98, paid training available! Portage Public Schools is seeking bus drivers to join our Transportation Department. Prior experience operating a school bus is preferred; however, we provide paid training to qualified applicants. To become a school bus driver for Portage, you must have or be willing to obtain the following:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Strong references and be of good moral character
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to pass the Department of Transportation physical standards required by P. A. 187, administered by DOT doctor(s)
  • Submit to and pass a criminal history background check
  • Pass a preliminary drug screen test
  • Must have a clean (two points or less) driving record
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver License that includes the following endorsements: Chauffeurs, Class B, P and S endorsements, as well as air brake endorsement
  • Train for and pass a road skills test
  • Must enroll in a three day beginning bus driver class provided by KRESA
  • Must take six hours of continuing education classes every two years.
