What does a pool manager do?

A pool manager oversees the operations of the swimming pool and other aquatic facilities at a public recreation center or private club. As a pool manager, your job duties include managing the staff schedule, hiring and training new staff, supervising lifeguards during busy hours, and enforcing facility safety rules and policies with patrons. Before the center opens, you walk through the whole facility, inspecting equipment and water slides for potential damage and safety issues, and request repairs and maintenance when necessary. You also document the number of visitors that come to the facility daily and make recommendations on how to improve the recreation center's procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pool manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pool Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, knowledge of pool safety regulations, and experience in facility maintenance, often supported by certifications like lifeguard training and CPO (Certified Pool Operator). Familiarity with scheduling software and water quality testing equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills help manage staff and resolve issues with patrons. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and enjoyable operation of the pool facility for all users.

What are some common challenges a pool manager faces during peak season, and how can they be addressed?

During peak season, Pool Managers often encounter challenges such as managing high guest volumes, ensuring staff coverage, and maintaining safety standards. Balancing guest satisfaction with strict adherence to safety protocols requires strong organizational skills and quick decision-making. Effective delegation, clear communication with lifeguards and maintenance staff, and proactive scheduling can help address these challenges. Regular staff training and contingency planning for emergencies are also key strategies for success.

Born from the elegant merger of the culinary and hospitality worlds, Appellation is much more than a typical hotel company. Inspired by its name, this new hotel brand brings together the best of local elements in a new way: a hotel collection powered by people, connected by food, and defined by place—all designed to celebrate its destinations’ culture, community, and craftsmanship. Developed by visionary co-founders Charlie Palmer, one of America’s best-known, award-winning chefs and pioneer in the American hotel-restaurant model, and Christopher Hunsberger, a 30-year veteran of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and its former president of North Americas. Join Appellation as its first hotels and resorts take root in 2025.

Overview of Position:

The Pool Attendant / Server at Appellation Healdsburg is a key part of the hotel’s outdoor hospitality experience, ensuring that guests enjoy a luxurious, relaxing atmosphere at the pool. Combining attentive service and a friendly demeanor, this role provides food and beverage service at the pools and surrounding outdoor areas, while also maintaining cleanliness, presentation standards, and safety for all guests.

This is an ideal opportunity for a passionate hospitality professional who enjoys working in a dynamic, guest-focused setting, with a love for providing personalized service in a relaxed luxury environment.

  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the pool deck and cabana areas, including wiping tables, straightening chairs, and replenishing water and amenities.
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of the pool area each day, ensuring towels and other supplies are stocked and neatly presented.
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety and sanitation, including monitoring pool water conditions (as required by hotel policy), and responding promptly to spills or other hazards.
  • Communicate effectively with the kitchen and bar teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of food and drinks.
  • Assist in managing guest incidents or concerns with professionalism and grace, escalating to a supervisor when necessary.
  • Maintain awareness of hotel events, amenities, and property offerings to answer guest questions and promote hotel services.
  • Support the pool supervisor with light administrative tasks, such as towel inventory or guest usage logs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Pool Manager or Food & Beverage Supervisor.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a poolside, resort, or high-volume outdoor dining environment preferred.
  • Warm, engaging personality with exceptional guest service skills and a commitment to making each guest feel welcome and valued.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced, sometimes physically demanding environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and a keen eye for cleanliness and safety.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of food and beverage service, with a willingness to learn menu details and beverage pairings.
  • Physical stamina to lift trays, push pool carts, and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Familiarity with POS systems and basic computer skills.
  • Lifeguard or pool safety certifications (a plus, but not required).
