Polyworks Programming information

What is the difference between Polyworks Programming vs CAD Technician?

AspectPolyworks ProgrammingCAD Technician
CredentialsTechnical training in Polyworks, CAD software knowledgeDiploma or degree in CAD, drafting, or engineering
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, quality control, 3D scanning environmentsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing support
Industry UsageMetrology, reverse engineering, quality assuranceProduct design, drafting, technical documentation

Polyworks Programming focuses on developing and executing 3D metrology and scanning processes using Polyworks software, often in manufacturing settings. CAD Technicians primarily create and modify technical drawings and models using CAD software. While both roles require technical skills and familiarity with design tools, Polyworks Programming emphasizes 3D data processing and quality control, whereas CAD Technicians concentrate on design documentation and drafting tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PolyWorks programmer?

To thrive as a PolyWorks Programmer, you need a solid foundation in 3D metrology, computer-aided design (CAD), and programming concepts, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with PolyWorks software, scripting languages (like Python or VBScript), and experience with coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) or laser scanners is vital. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you interpret technical requirements and collaborate with engineers and clients. These competencies ensure precise data analysis, efficient workflow automation, and reliable quality control in manufacturing environments.

What is PolyWorks programming?

PolyWorks programming refers to using the PolyWorks software suite to automate, customize, and optimize 3D metrology processes. PolyWorks is widely used in manufacturing and engineering for tasks like dimensional analysis, quality control, and reverse engineering. Programming within PolyWorks often involves scripting, typically with macros or plugins, to streamline measurement workflows and integrate with other systems. This helps improve accuracy, efficiency, and data management in inspection processes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in PolyWorks programming, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in PolyWorks programming often encounter challenges such as managing complex measurement workflows, integrating diverse 3D scanning hardware, and ensuring accurate data alignment and reporting. These challenges can be addressed by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of PolyWorks modules and features, collaborating closely with manufacturing and quality teams, and participating in ongoing training sessions provided by the software vendor. Additionally, effective communication with project stakeholders helps clarify requirements and streamline troubleshooting, ultimately improving workflow efficiency.

Job description

We're more than aviation experts, we're pioneers. We challenge what's possible. From breaking the sound barrier to advanced tiltrotor systems. Today, Bell is shaping the future of aviation through specialized engineering. And we want you.

We are developing the future of Army Aviation with the Bell Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) part of the US Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL) modernization effort. We are also developing the Bell 525 Relentless and Bell's High-Speed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (HSVTOL) program, a next generation stop-fold aircraft.

This position is on site in Fort Worth at Bell's Rotors and Composite Center.  Could occasionally assist other DFW facilities as needed.

Quality Operations Team

Review current inspection capabilities to identify gaps and opportunities for improving efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability, and develop standardized inspection technique sheets for process setup and execution of metrology inspections used for product acceptance.

Identify and integrate new measurement technologies and methodologies to support manufacturing and customer needs, including on-machine inspection, equipment advancements, and alignment with modern industry standards such as ASME Y14.5 GD&T.

What you'll be doing as a Senior Quality Metrology Engineer

Perform precise measurements using portable metrology systems (Leica laser trackers, Creaform scanners, Romer arms, Keyence systems, etc.), apply sound data acquisition techniques, and develop/verify results using manual measuring methods.

Perform data reduction and postprocessing using Spatial Analyzer, Polyworks, PCDMIS, and Creaform OS; create graphical and numerical reports; and conduct Measurement System Analysis (MSA) per AIAG MSA Manual and ISO 9001:2015 to evaluate and improve measurement system accuracy and reliability.

Work closely with internal and external customers to assess needs and develop tailored metrology approaches aligned with project objectives, while properly evaluating and interpreting engineering models, GD&T intent, and design specifications using CATIA V5/V6, 3DX, SolidWorks, and similar software.

Collaborate with Technical Training to create formal training programs for equipment familiarization and operation, while deploying and facilitating training and mentoring inspection personnel on machine usage and postprocessing reporting.

Develop solutions to moderately complex problems requiring ingenuity and innovative thinking and assist in developing fabrication/build processes and standards to enhance quality and efficiency.

Skills You Bring To This Role:

Hold a Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field required.

Has at least 5 years of work experience working in quality with specific or equivalent Laser Scanner/ portable metrology scanner /non-contact inspection tools. Lecia Laser Scanner would be preferred.

Very good GD&T skills, including interpretation, and application, along with prior experience using metrology hardware and software.

Demonstrate strong knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS), standards such as AS9100, AS9110, ISO9000 or equivalent quality management, and statistical/numerical analytical methods,

Apply broad software proficiency including MS Office tools, Minitab, CAMs, PEO, CATIA/3DX, MES, Power BI, SAP, and related systems.

Ability to support and guide cross-functional teams effectively and efficiently through strong written and oral communication skills, maintain exemplary interpersonal and leadership abilities, and interface seamlessly with internal and external organizations to perform quality functions.

Able to foster and maintain effective relationships within Bell, as well as with internal and external customers, to confidently communicate technical issues with data.

Thrive in dynamic, innovative environments by utilizing an adaptable and creative mindset strengthened by technical expertise and professional experience.
