What is a policy internship?

Policy internships are short-term work experiences, often offered by government agencies, think tanks, advocacy groups, or nonprofits, where interns assist with research, analysis, and development of public policy. These positions provide valuable exposure to how policies are formed, evaluated, and implemented. Policy interns may attend meetings, draft briefs, and collaborate with professionals in the field, making it a great opportunity for those interested in politics, law, or public administration.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a policy intern?

As a policy intern, you can expect to work on a range of tasks such as conducting research on legislative issues, drafting memos or policy briefs, attending meetings or hearings, and assisting with data analysis. Interns often support full-time policy staff by summarizing reports, tracking relevant legislation, and helping to prepare presentations. The work environment is typically collaborative, so you’ll have opportunities to interact with different departments, attend team meetings, and contribute to ongoing projects. This hands-on experience allows you to develop a strong understanding of the policy-making process and build valuable professional connections.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a policy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Policy Intern, you typically need strong research, analytical, and written communication skills, often supported by coursework in political science, public policy, or related fields. Familiarity with policy analysis tools, legislative tracking systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar software is commonly required. Initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively help interns stand out in fast-paced policy environments. These skills are crucial for effectively supporting policy development, preparing reports, and ensuring accurate communication of complex information.
