Job description

This is professional management level work assisting the Police Legal Advisor in providing legal counsel and training on a wide variety of administrative, personnel, and criminal law questions and acts on behalf of the Police Legal Division. Primary work involves administration of nuisance abatement program, researching and acting as a resource for enforcement of the municipal code, and prosecuting administrative appeals and local proceedings. Work also involves providing sound legal counsel to the Police Department on legal issues including civil liability, criminal law, personnel administration, labor relations, disciplinary procedures, and legislative matters; and conducting legal research; planning, developing, and conducting Police Department training programs on subjects related to civil, criminal, and local law. This position serves as a liaison between the Police Department and the City and State Attorney offices and may serve as the acting Police Legal Advisor, at times. Work also involves litigating and prosecuting cases, including civil forfeiture, nuisance abatement, impoundments, trespassing, traffic appeals, ordinance violations, risk protection orders, and any related appeals. Work of this class is performed with considerable latitude and requires competent independent judgment and initiative within the framework of established policies and guidelines.

Salary: $87,960 - $138,372 DOQ

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Have graduated from an accredited school of law.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Be a member in good standing of the Florida Bar.
  • Possess and maintain a valid license to practice law in the State of Florida.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, an applicant must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Have experience as a practicing attorney in the areas of criminal law, civil law, or administrative/governmental law.
  • Have extensive knowledge of the Florida rules of evidence and judicial administration, including procedural rules related to confidential information and discovery.
  • Have extensive knowledge of municipal, state, and federal, civil and criminal laws and of constitutional legal issues affecting City government and law enforcement agencies.
  • Be able to conduct thorough legal research and develop sound recommendations based on legal precedents.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including preparing error-free legal documents and making public presentations.
  • Have meticulous attention to detail.
