Summary of Position
On any of three rotating shifts, performs routine and specialized police patrol functions enforcing rules, regulations and laws including investigating violations of these rules, regulations and laws and generating written reports, issuing citations or making arrests. Ensures the safety and welfare of the Central Texas College Campus and its facilities, staff, faculty, students and guests.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED (required).
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification (required).
โข Associate's degree (preferred).
Successful completion or currently enrolled in a Basic Police Academy.
One (1) year of security, law enforcement or military experience (preferred).
Must be at least 21 years of age or older; possess a valid Texas Driver's License and qualify for insurance under CTCD commercial auto policy.
Knowledge Skills and Ability
โข Ability to establish and maintain a positive and effective working relationships with students, subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public.
โข Has working knowledge of Police radio and police terminology including radio 10 Codes.
โข Must be proficient in the operation of a patrol vehicle to include installed equipment.
โข Must meet minimum annual weapons qualification as mandated by TCOLE requirements.
โข Must be proficient in the use of PC operating system, mobile networking computers with windows applications or programs and word processing.
โข Must have the ability to complete written reports upon investigating complaints of criminal activity or suspected criminal activity.
โข Demonstrated good written and oral communications skills.
โข Demonstrated fundamental proficiency in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure.
โข Working knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
โข Must be knowledgeable in local, state and federal law, Texas Education Code, city ordinances, and campus rules and regulations.
โข Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions including taking law enforcement action and making arrests.
โข Must have the skill to operate tools and equipment pertinent to the position to include but not limited to the police patrol vehicle, police radio, handgun and other lethal and non-lethal weapons such as the side handle baton or ASP, pepper spray and handcuffs; first aid and safety equipment including the AED; may have to show proficiency with those tools on an annual basis.
โข Must have the ability to perform work requiring good physical conditioning.
โข Ability to work campus special events as assigned or needed on weekends or after normal operating hours.
โข Must be able to work independently on certain assigned shifts with no supervisory personnel on site and available only by phone.
โข Working knowledge of the basic principals in Crisis Intervention and Active Shooter techniques.
โข Ability to maintain Department's physical, medical, and psychological standards.
โข Height and weight must be in proportion. โข Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs.; and have the ability to be on feet and walk for up to 5 hours at a time while on shift. โข Must be able to pass a physical exam to include physical conditioning exam and a drug screening test. โข May be required to submit to a Psychological exam upon hire or any time during employment.
Essential Functions
โข On any of three rotating shifts, or other special shift, patrols campus streets, parks, facilities, buildings and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce state, federal and local laws and Campus rules and regulations.
โข Develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with CTCD students, staff, and public to create daily helpful and positive interaction with all. Conduct daily walks through Campus, as assigned, to interact with students, staff and guests.
โข Control vehicular traffic with high visibility and by enforcing the Texas Transportation Code and issuing citations; investigates vehicle crashes and generates reports as needed. Assists motorists on campus who experience mechanical or functional difficulties with their vehicles.
โข Performs security checks on all campus buildings, maintaining high visibility to prevent and deter crimes and criminal activity. Opens or secures buildings and/or rooms as needed or required.
โข Maintains liaison with local law enforcement agencies on all aspects of law enforcement. Responds to calls for assistance from surrounding agencies and/or the Bell County Communication Center involving criminal activity, civil disturbances; investigates each call for service, providing a written report as needed.
โข Upon investigation of a crime, seeks out and questions victims, witnesses and suspects. Gathers intelligence and develops leads and tips. Searches, processes, analyze and evaluate crime scenes for clues and gathers evidence.
โข Arrests offenders; transports prisoners to local jails and prepares cases for testimony in criminal court.
โข Assists with conducting orientations, training, community policing and campus crime prevention programs.
โข Notifies appropriate maintenance personnel in the event of mechanical breakdowns involving campus property, vehicles, lighting, and or equipment and responds to alarms (fire, security, boiler, lift station) as needed.
โข Makes daily bank pick-ups and deposits as required.
โข Reports for correction, any observed, non-criminal safety violation on campus to a supervisor or directly to Risk Management.
โข Officers will be required to maintain a level of physical condition that is consistent with the safe and effective performance of law enforcement duties. โข Vision no less than 20/20 or 20/40 with correctable lenses.
