Description PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to plan, organize, and supervise law enforcement activities and critical incidents during a shift. Performs supervisory and general law enforcement work in order to preserve public peace; to protect lives, property and rights of the public; and to enforce statutory laws and municipal ordinances. Work involves supervising shift operations of the Sheriff's Office, supervising staff, and preparing and maintaining departmental records, reports, schedules and other related administrative documents.
*OPEN UNTIL FILLED* Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with County policies, procedures and applicable laws; manages assigned operations; supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. Supervises the work of deputies on an assigned shift; conducts briefings to provide staff with information needed to perform their job; conducts roll calls; assigns daily duty activities; provides direction and guidance as needed; reviews work of officers including notes and reports prepared for shift activities, offenses and incidents, victim and suspect statements, and other related information; evaluates performance of deputies on assigned shift; works with staff to resolve personnel issues; investigates personal injuries of staff; and ensures subordinates comply with departmental policies, procedures, and standards. Performs a variety of administrative duties associated with supervising a shift to include preparing monthly reports, documenting incidents, maintaining records, inspecting officers' uniforms, etc.
Reduces the commission of crimes and maintains law enforcement by patrolling throughout the County; patrols streets and neighborhoods in a police vehicle, police motorcycle, and/or on foot; apprehends and/or arrests persons who violate statutory law and/or local ordinances; performs rescue functions at accidents, emergency scenes and disaster areas. Conducts regular visual inspections of the law enforcement personnel, uniforms, vehicles, and equipment; schedules preventive maintenance and repairs of equipment and vehicles. Supervises and participates in all duties performed by Court Services and Warrants division on assigned shift; takes defendants into custody when ordered to jail; serves civil papers, such as divorce complaints, restraining orders, lawsuits, etc.; provides transport services of prisoners
Supervises and participates in the shift operations of the Criminal Investigation, Narcotics, Identification/Evidence, and Records/Permit sections; provides investigative and preventive community law enforcement activities; assists in general or complex investigations of criminal activity; responds to calls for service and conducts preliminary investigations, determining the appropriate course of action to be taken; identifies, collects, marks, and preserves evidence; interviews victims and witnesses and interrogates suspects; makes recommendations for the approval of expenditures for narcotic buys; writes search warrants for the department; assists in the execution of high risk searches. Supervises shift operations for Patrol and Animal Control; performs general law enforcement work; responds to calls for service; arrests violators; processes prisoners; assists motorists; assists in medical emergencies; monitors radio transmission to insure that all calls for service are properly handled; responds to scene of subordinates' calls to answer questions, authorize actions, take control of situations, to monitor work, or to act as back up unit; leads funeral processions. Supervises and participates in the operation of the jail facility on assigned shift; assists in controlling, monitoring, and evaluating jail security systems; makes classifications of inmate placement; assists in managing volunteer service programs; completes jail incident reports and bonds; balances commissary funds; makes bank deposits.
Supervises and develops crime prevention programs; organizes neighborhood watch programs; prepares pamphlets; promotes community awareness through public service announcements; conducts crime analysis; supervises and participates in the DARE and GREAT instruction programs, hostage negotiations, gang intelligence, computer forensics, and the cyber sex offender's registry programs. Answers questions; provides information; resolves complaints from the general public, other agencies and community groups; coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies; engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the Sheriff's Office and to build a cooperative and collaborative relationship with the community. May participate as a member of the special response team; responds to emergency call for situations involving hostage situations, barricaded persons, high-risk drug raids, riots, escaped prisoner searches, high security activities, or other situations requiring Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team assistance; participates in regular training activities.
Participates in departmental training; maintains physical fitness; attends classes and seminars; develops and conducts force training; assesses training needs. Assists in budget preparation and the development of new policies. Requisitions supplies.
Operates a computer terminal, vehicle, firearms, law enforcement equipment, office equipment, video equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required. Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must successfully complete the State of Georgia, Basic Mandate Training. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Peace Officer certification.
May require one or more of the following certifications: General Instructor, Instructor - Specialized, Intoxilyzer 5000, National Safety Council Instructor, Radar, DARE Instructor, Crime Prevention, Hostage Negotiation, Basic Data Recovery, Jail Officer, or First Aid/CPR. Assignment to DARE Program requires Associates degree, plus above requirements. Supplemental Information ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds).
