JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Communications Specialist / Assistant
LOCATION: Administration Building
WAGE: $24 - $28 / Hour, depending on qualifications
SUPERVISOR: Tribal Communications Manager
THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION
JOB SUMMARY: This position requires a detail-oriented individual with the ability to perform a variety of media communications tasks, including website management, social media management, graphic design, photography, and news-style writing. Assist the Tribal Communications Manager in effectively and consistently accomplishing all Tribal Media Communications and Public Relations for the Red Cliff Tribe, its programs, and businesses.
Due to the flexibility of media and communications work, regular hours may vary based on job assignments and Tribal events. This position reports to the Tribal Communications Manager
Examples of Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist with the management of communications for the Tribe's various stakeholders, membership, media, and other outside information contacts for the Tribe.
  2. Create and/or distribute graphics, flyers, newsletters, brochures, videos, magazines, podcast, and other digital/print media in accordance with Tribal policy and guidelines.
  3. Consistent updates on Tribal web presence including, but not limited to: content on website pages and sub-pages, maintaining online events calendar, forms, and interactive components.
  4. Monitor and provide assistance with managing content on Tribal social media accounts.
  5. Assist with proofreading, editing, and updating content submitted by Tribal government entities and programs.
  6. Attend Tribal events and/or Council Meetings to provide or assist with photo and/or video coverage.
  7. Assist with the production of a weekly Tribal newsletter (digital and print). This may include gathering information, speaking with community members and elders, writing articles, proofreading submitted information, printing, and distribution.
  8. Facilitate interactions with outside media and news organizations.
  9. Assist with selling and managing advertisement space across the Tribe's various media outlets.
  10. Assist with other communications or Information Technology tasks as required.
  11. The above duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Typical Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of:
  1. Public relations, media relations
  2. Computer and technology literacy: experience with / ability to learn Microsoft Office applications; Adobe Creative Suite or other graphic design and website content management systems; printing machines
  3. Experience with or ability to learn how to operate photo/video camera and recording equipment
  4. Document design, publishing, and editing
  5. Basic knowledge of computers, information systems, and publishing software
  6. Social media outlets, content, and management

Skilled in:
  1. Strong written and verbal communication skills with focused attention to detail.
  2. Demonstrated ability to proofread, identify, and correct mistakes related to spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  3. Broad aspects of document design.
  4. News-style and feature article writing
  5. Photography / camera operation
  6. Demonstrate enthusiasm and a positive attitude, even during times of high-pace and/or stressful work environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Degree or certificate in communications-related field of study preferred. Demonstrated experience in a communications field or media related skills may be considered as a replacement for a formal degree.
  2. Portfolio of work pertaining to graphic design, document production, photography, and writing skills.
  3. Must have a valid driver's license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver's eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the Tribe's vehicle insurance policy.

Supplemental Information
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Considerable daily contact will be made with Tribal staff and Tribal community members. This may include Tribal Council members, representatives of other Tribes and governments, Tribal membership and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties assigned to this position involve bending, crouching, kneeling, lifting and carrying basic technology equipment, walking / hiking, maneuvering of event sites. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: All Tribal Buildings are smoke free. Outdoor work in various weather conditions and temperatures.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The ability to travel and attend events, meetings and trainings throughout Red Cliff and the local surrounding areas.

The manner in which the employee relates to fellow employees, customers and visitors is considered parallel in importance to technical knowledge and ability. Any behavior or attitude that tarnishes the name or image of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will be subject to immediate disciplinary action up to and including termination.
