What does a podcast host do?

A Podcast Host is responsible for leading and managing a podcast show. They introduce topics, interview guests, guide conversations, and engage listeners throughout each episode. The host also often collaborates with producers, researches content, and helps promote the podcast. Their goal is to create an engaging and informative experience for their audience, ensuring the show runs smoothly from start to finish.

What does a podcast host do?

As a podcast host, your responsibilities focus on offering commentary that engages your audience, interviewing guests, and performing other on-air duties during recording. As a podcast host, you plan your show and research the topic under discussion, sketch out questions for guests, and work with advertisers to produce lead-in copy. As you are the “face” of the podcast, you engage with fans, press, and the public through social media, podcast conventions, or live recording events. Typically, a podcast host works in a subject with which they are already familiar, such as sports, technology, politics, history, or news.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a podcast host, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Podcast Host, you need excellent verbal communication, storytelling ability, and a thorough understanding of your podcast's subject matter. Familiarity with audio recording equipment, editing software like Audacity or Adobe Audition, and podcast distribution platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and the ability to engage and build rapport with guests and listeners help make a host stand out. These skills are vital for producing high-quality, engaging content that attracts and retains a loyal audience.

What are some common challenges faced by podcast hosts when preparing and recording episodes?

Podcast hosts often encounter challenges such as securing engaging guests, managing tight recording schedules, and ensuring high-quality audio. Balancing thorough research with conversational spontaneity can also be demanding, as hosts aim to deliver value while keeping discussions natural. Additionally, technical issues and the need for effective post-production collaboration with editors and producers are frequent hurdles. Being adaptable and developing strong organizational skills can help podcast hosts navigate these complexities successfully.

According to industry data, many hosts earn from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per episode, with top-tier hosts making six-figure incomes annually. The audio revolution is here - and iHeart is leading it! iHeartMedia, the number one audio company in America, reaches 90% of Americans every month -- a monthly audience that's twice the size of any other audio company - almost three times the size of the largest TV network - and almost 4 times the size of the largest ad-supported music streaming service. And we were just recognized as one of the Top Media Sales Organizations by The Myers Report!

In fact, iHeart has: More #1 rated markets than the next two largest radio companies combined;

  • We're the largest podcast publisher, with more monthly downloads than the second- and third-largest podcast publishers combined. Podcasting, the fastest-growing new media, today has more monthly users than streaming music services or Netflix;

  • iHeart is the home of many of the country's most popular and trusted on-air personalities and podcast influencers, who build important connections with hundreds of communities across America;

  • We create and produce some of the most popular and well-known branded live music events in America, including the iHeartRadio Music Festival, the iHeartRadio Music Awards, the iHeartCountry Festival, iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina and the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour;

  • iHeartRadio is the #1 streaming radio digital service in America;

  • Our social media footprint is 7 times larger than the next largest audio service; and

  • We have the only complete audio ad technology stack in the industry for all forms of audio, from on demand to broadcast radio, digital streaming radio and podcasting, which bring data, targeting and attribution to all forms of audio at an unparalleled scale. As a result, we're able to combine our strong leadership position in audience reach, usage and ad tech with powerful tools and insights for our sales organizations to help them build success for their clients at a more efficient cost than any other option.

Because we reach almost every community in America, we're committed to providing a range of programming that reflects the diversity of the many communities we serve - and our company reflects that same kind of diversity.
