What is a PMP Project Manager?

A PMP project manager is an experienced project manager who has earned the Project Management Professional certification. The Project Management Institute (PMI) issues this credential. Typical job duties of a PMP project manager involve assigning tasks, monitoring progress, maintaining a budget, and communicating with clients. The main career qualifications, aside from certification, include project management experience and communication skills.

What is a PMP Project Manager?

A PMP Project Manager is a professional who has earned the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, which is a globally recognized credential offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). This certification demonstrates that the individual has the skills and experience needed to lead and direct projects successfully. PMP Project Managers are trained in industry-standard project management practices and methodologies, and they are often responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while managing teams, budgets, and timelines. Their expertise helps organizations deliver projects efficiently and achieve strategic objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PMP Project Manager?

To thrive as a PMP Project Manager, you need expertise in project planning, budgeting, risk management, and leadership, typically validated by a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana, and adherence to PMI methodologies, are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help set top performers apart. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational objectives.

How does a PMP Project Manager typically interact with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

A PMP Project Manager often acts as the central point of coordination among diverse teams, such as developers, designers, business analysts, and stakeholders. They facilitate regular meetings, track progress, and ensure that communication flows smoothly to align everyone with the project's goals and timelines. This collaboration requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mediate between different priorities or potential conflicts. By fostering a collaborative environment, the Project Manager helps ensure that deliverables meet quality standards and are completed on schedule.

Both roles require strong leadership and communication skills but serve different project management approaches and environments.

How much do project managers with a PMP make?

Project managers with a PMP certification typically earn higher salaries than those without it. In the United States, the average annual salary for a PMP-certified project manager ranges from $90,000 to $130,000, depending on experience, industry, and location. PMP certification demonstrates expertise in project management methodologies like PMI's PMBOK, which can lead to increased earning potential and career advancement.

Is PMP enough to get a project manager job?

A PMP certification is highly valued for project manager roles, demonstrating knowledge of project management principles and best practices. However, employers often also consider relevant experience, leadership skills, and familiarity with project management tools like MS Project or Agile methodologies. Overview
Within SSOE's Tool Install division, we specialize in the design and engineering of complex process equipment across semiconductor fabs and advanced manufacturing facilities. Our team is composed of highly skilled professionals who excel across multiple disciplines, bringing deep technical expertise to every tool hookup, subfab rack design, and cleanroom modification we deliver. Our in-house experts partner closely to conceptualize, plan, and detail every aspect of the installation design process.
We are currently hiring an Engineering Project Manager (Tool Install Design Lead) for our team. In this role, you will collaborate with lead engineers, manage project scope and schedule, drive technical decisions, and be the primary design liaison to client Tool Experts, ensuring alignment between SSOE's technical approach and client expectations. Working alongside the designated Project Manager, you co-lead the project through all phases to final delivery. This partnership ensures both technical excellence and consistent client engagement throughout the lifecycle. Together, you form a unified team responsible for delivering exceptional results from every angle.
This is a hybrid position located in the heart of Utah's Silicon Slopes corridor, with easy access from Salt Lake City, Draper, Sandy, American Fork, Orem, and Provo.
AI and Innovation
At SSOE, we don't just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, you'll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.
Responsibilities
  • Craft and implement detailed project plans encompassing technical specifications, engineering standards, and quality control measures, including hookup design, subfab laterals, and process equipment layouts.
  • Lead and contribute to day-to-day coordination with delivery teams and partnering closely with the Project Manager to align design execution with client expectations, schedules, and budgets.
  • Serve as the Design Liaison to client Tool Experts and Project Managers to clear design constraints and close open issues
  • Collaborate with lead engineers from multiple disciplines to manage project scope, drive technical decisions, and ensure deliverables meet stringent semiconductor industry standards.
  • Proactively identify, understand, and manage the project scope, track project progress, mitigate engineering risks, and proactively address design challenges across functional areas of the fab.
  • Champion process improvements and engineer innovative technical solutions to project-related issues.
  • Coordinate technical meetings, manage document control, and support RFI responses with contractors, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Handle increasingly complex tool install work assignments, adhering to defined scope, schedule, and cost guidelines with moderate supervision.
  • Identify and address technical obstacles to keep projects on track in fast-paced, schedule-driven semiconductor environments.

Qualifications
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to internal teams, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in engineering and drafting software tools, with a strong technical aptitude for leveraging technology to drive project efficiency.
  • Ability to thrive in collaborative, cross-office environments, including coordination with international project sites and global teams.
  • Familiarity with tool installation, process equipment installation design, or semiconductor fab environments is a strong plus.
  • Previous experience as a Design Lead, Engineering Project Manager, or similar role in a semiconductor, advanced technology, or industrial construction environment is highly preferred.
  • An Associate degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial, process, or structural). A Bachelor's degree is highly preferred.
  • Certification as a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is a plus.
  • Salary Range: $75,000 - $130,000/year depending on location, education, depth of relevant experience, and any specialized licensure/certifications. Opportunity for ample rewards, leadership incentive components, and generous bonus opportunities.
  • Benefits: Includes comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, 401K retirement savings plan (with company matching), opportunities for professional development and training (including support for relevant licensure & certifications), and generous PTO & paid holidays.

Join us at SSOE, where your expertise will thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering excellence.
