What is a PM intern?

PM interns, or Product Management interns, are students or recent graduates who work temporarily with a company's product management team. Their role typically involves assisting with market research, data analysis, coordinating between engineering and design teams, and helping to define product features or roadmaps. PM interns gain hands-on experience in how products are developed and launched, and they learn essential skills in communication, strategy, and project management. These internships are valuable stepping stones for those interested in full-time product management roles after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a PM intern typically expect during their internship?

As a PM Intern, you can expect to work on a mix of real-world projects such as assisting with product launches, conducting market research, analyzing user feedback, and helping define product requirements. You'll often collaborate closely with engineering, design, and marketing teams to support the product manager in moving initiatives forward. This hands-on experience is designed to give you insight into the product development lifecycle and build key skills in communication, project management, and cross-functional teamwork. Interns are typically given ownership of smaller features or tasks, with regular mentorship and feedback to support their professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PM intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PM Intern, you need strong analytical abilities, organizational skills, and a foundational understanding of project management principles, often supported by coursework in business or related fields. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, and basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel or Google Workspace are commonly expected. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are essential soft skills that help a PM Intern excel. These skills and qualities are crucial for managing project tasks, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and contributing to successful project outcomes.

We provide evidence-based mental health and substance use services to individuals and families across the state. Our mission is to deliver compassionate, culturally responsive care that strengthens communities.
This internship is part of K&I's 2026 community growth initiative, placing marketing talent directly in the communities we serve.
What You'll Do
As the Marketing & Outreach Intern based in Waldorf, you will be the on-the-ground presence for K&I in Charles County and Southern Maryland. This is a hands-on, field-forward role - you will spend time in the community, not behind a desk all day.
Community Outreach & Partnerships
  • Research and build a referral partner pipeline across Charles County and Southern Maryland (primary care offices, schools, faith communities, community organizations)
  • Schedule and coordinate introduction meetings between K&I leadership and identified community partners
  • Distribute K&I marketing materials to referral sources throughout Charles County and Southern Maryland
  • Build targeted relationships with Charles County schools, Department of Social Services, Charles Regional Medical Center, and local primary care providers
  • Represent K&I at community health fairs and outreach events under direct supervision
  • Document all outreach activity in K&I tracking systems for compliance reporting

Marketing Content & Asset Support
  • Create and localize community-facing materials (flyers, brochures, event signage) using K&I brand templates
  • Develop Charles County and Southern Maryland-relevant content for K&I social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) from a pre-approved content calendar
  • Photograph approved K&I community events for marketing use (with appropriate releases)
  • Maintain physical marketing material inventory and coordinate reorders

Event Coordination
  • Coordinate logistics for health fairs and community events (venue confirmation, materials transport, registration tables)
  • Handle post-event documentation, lead capture, and follow-up tracking
  • Coordinate periodically with the Baltimore-based Marketing & Outreach Intern for cross-location alignment

Reporting & Admin
  • Submit weekly written outreach activity reports to your supervisor
  • Maintain accurate records of community contacts, event documentation, and distribution logs
  • Track hours and submit timesheets via BambooHR

What We're Looking For

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Comfortable representing an organization professionally in community settings
  • Valid Maryland driver's license and reliable personal transportation
  • Ability to lift and transport marketing materials up to 30 lbs
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Authorized to work in the United States (I-9 / E-Verify)

Preferred
  • Familiarity with the Waldorf community and local organizations
  • Prior experience in marketing, community outreach, healthcare, social services, or nonprofits
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (a plus, not required)
  • Basic graphic design skills (Canva, Adobe Express, or similar)
  • Experience with CRM or social media scheduling tools

Important Details
  • This position has NO direct patient/client contact and NO access to Protected Health Information (PHI)
  • Required compliance training (HIPAA awareness, mandated reporter, K&I code of conduct) must be completed within your first 7 days
  • Position begins with a 90-day introductory period; conversion to permanent status is merit-based and not guaranteed
  • At-will employment - neither this posting nor any K&I document creates a contract of employment

Compensation & Benefits
  • $15.00/hr during 90-day introductory period (Maryland minimum wage)
  • $16.00-$18.00/hr upon conversion to permanent status (based on performance)
  • Paid sick & safe leave per Maryland Healthy Working Families Act
