Job description

Utah State University Athletics is seeking a dynamic, relationship-centered leader to serve as the Director of Sports Medicine (Executive Director in HRIS system). This position provides strategic oversight and leadership for the Sports Medicine Department while fostering a collaborative, high-performance healthcare environment that prioritizes student-athlete well-being and performance. 

The Director of Sports Medicine will oversee the daily operations of athletic healthcare services, provide direct athletic training coverage for an assigned sport program, and serve as a key connector among coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, performance staff, and university administration. This position will play a critical role in strengthening departmental culture, communication, and advancing an integrated model of athletic healthcare. 

The ideal candidate is an experienced leader who values teamwork, communication, accountability, and relationship-building, and who can effectively align medical care, performance goals, and student-athlete development within a collaborative high-performance model. 


  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Sports Medicine Department, including staffing, scheduling, operations, policies, and procedures.  
  • Serve as the primary athletic trainer for an assigned intercollegiate athletic team.  
  • Lead the development and advancement of an integrated, evidence-based, high-performance healthcare model for student-athletes.  
  • Foster strong collaborative relationships among team physicians, coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning staff, mental health professionals, and administration.  
  • Serve as a culture-builder within the department by promoting professionalism, trust, accountability, communication, and teamwork.  
  • Oversee the education, mentorship, and professional development of the Sports Medicine staff.  
  • Coordinate and standardize medical documentation and electronic medical records in accordance with NCAA, state, federal, and university regulations.  
  • Develop, implement, and annually review emergency action plans and departmental healthcare policies and procedures.  
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, university, and sports medicine best practice standards.  
  • Coordinate healthcare communication and continuity of care among internal and external medical providers.  
  • Oversee departmental quality improvement initiatives and promote evidence-based healthcare practices.  
  • Assist with departmental budgeting, purchasing, and resource allocation for sports medicine operations.  
  • Support the educational mission of the department through mentorship and collaboration with students, interns, and emerging professionals.  
  • Promote a student-athlete-centered approach emphasizing physical health, mental well-being, recovery, and performance optimization.  

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Master's degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or related field  
  • BOC certification and eligibility for Utah licensure as an Athletic Trainer  
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in collegiate or professional athletics healthcare, including 3 years of leadership/supervisory experience
  • Experience working collaboratively with physicians, coaches, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams  
  • Current CPR/AED certification

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Dual credentials as both an Athletic Trainer (ATC) and Physical Therapist (PT)  
  • Experience serving as an NCAA Health Care Administrator/Health Care Designation Administrator  
  • Experience within an NCAA Division I athletics environment  
  • Experience implementing or leading a high-performance model  
  • Demonstrated success in staff development and mentorship  
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records systems and healthcare operations management
