Plus Size Fit Model information

What is a plus size fit model?

A Plus Size Fit Model is a professional who helps fashion brands ensure their clothing fits and drapes correctly on plus-size bodies. Unlike runway or print models, fit models work behind the scenes, trying on garments during the design and production stages. They provide feedback on comfort, sizing, and movement, helping brands create well-fitting clothing for plus-size consumers. Fit models must maintain consistent body measurements and work closely with designers, pattern makers, and product developers.

What does a plus size fit model do?

A typical day for a Plus Size Fit Model involves attending multiple fittings where you'll try on sample garments and provide feedback on fit, comfort, and movement to design and technical teams. You will collaborate closely with designers, pattern makers, merchandisers, and sometimes product managers to help refine fit and style. This role often requires frequent standing and changing, clear communication skills, and maintaining punctuality for appointments. Working as a fit model is a hands-on, interactive process that directly influences the final look and feel of the brand’s clothing line.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a plus size fit model?

To thrive as a Plus Size Fit Model, you need precise body measurements within the brand’s required size range, excellent body awareness, and the ability to maintain consistent proportions. Familiarity with fittings, garment construction basics, and industry measurement tools are typically expected, though formal certifications are not usually required. Professionalism, strong communication, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills are essential to accurately represent the target consumer, facilitate productive feedback for designers, and maintain long-term, successful relationships with brands.

Job description

Central UtilityAbout the Role

At States Industries, our Central Utility team members are some of the most versatile employees in the operation. This position supports multiple functions throughout the Central Department and may also provide support to other areas of the Panel Plant as production needs change.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced manufacturing role that may include operating putty and patch equipment, saws, the size sander, forklifts, and other production equipment. Central Utility employees are expected to learn multiple jobs, move where they are needed, and help keep production running safely and efficiently.

Previous forklift experience is strongly preferred, and bilingual English/Spanish candidates are encouraged to apply.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys variety, learns quickly, works safely, and is willing to jump in wherever the team needs help.

What You’ll Do

As a Central Utility employee, you will:

  • Learn and operate multiple work centers throughout the Central Department.
  • Operate putty lines and Blank Stall Patch equipment.
  • Operate the size sander and other assigned production equipment.
  • Safely operate the Auto Saw and Manual Saw.
  • Ensure material is sawn and processed according to States Industries quality standards.
  • Safely operate a forklift to move and stage material throughout the department.
  • Read and understand putty color charts, customer requirements, production schedules, and work instructions.
  • Complete required production documentation accurately.
  • Enter production information into company MRP and other production systems.
  • Verify customer notes and order requirements before processing material.
  • Use a micrometer and other measuring equipment as required.
  • Inspect material and identify quality issues before product moves to the next operation.
  • Perform routine cleaning, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting of assigned equipment.
  • Help coordinate break coverage and production needs throughout Central.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Complete required JSAs, training, and certifications for assigned Central work centers.
  • Participate in TWI, 5S, Kaizen, Safety, Quality, and other continuous improvement activities.
  • Support the team in achieving safety, quality, and production goals.
  • Provide production support in Layup, SCP, Dryers, and other Panel Plant work centers as needed.
  • Learn additional equipment and processes as operational needs change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the team and operation.
What We’re Looking For

Central Utility is a good fit for someone who is flexible, dependable, mechanically inclined, and comfortable learning multiple jobs. You may be working in different areas depending on what production needs that day, so adaptability is important.

Successful candidates will bring:

  • Previous forklift operating experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required States Industries forklift certification.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Previous manufacturing, production, warehouse, or wood products experience preferred.
  • Experience operating saws, sanders, putty equipment, patch equipment, or other industrial machinery is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working around production equipment.
  • Basic computer and data-entry skills.
  • Experience with MRP/ERP or other manufacturing systems is a plus.
  • Ability to read and follow production schedules, customer notes, safety procedures, and work instructions.
  • Ability to use a micrometer and other measuring tools.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and help identify solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize work as production needs change.
  • Willingness to learn and work in multiple departments and production areas.
  • Dependability, a strong safety mindset, and a team-first attitude.
Safety & Quality

Because Central Utility employees work around several different types of equipment and throughout multiple production areas, safety awareness is especially important in this role.

Employees are expected to:

  • Follow all safety rules and established operating procedures.
  • Properly follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures whenever required.
  • Safely operate forklifts, saws, sanders, putty equipment, and other assigned machinery.
  • Recognize and communicate unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Inspect material and ensure it meets established quality requirements.
  • Follow customer and production specifications.
  • Support safe work practices wherever they are assigned throughout the Panel Plant.
Physical Requirements

This is an active manufacturing position. Employees in this role must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for most of the shift.
  • Frequently use hands and arms to operate equipment and handle materials.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and reach as required.
  • Safely lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive physical activities throughout the shift.
  • Safely work around forklifts, saws, sanders, and other moving production equipment.
Work Environment

This position works throughout an active plywood manufacturing environment and may include:

  • High noise levels.
  • Wood dust and other manufacturing-related conditions.
  • Moving machinery and production equipment.
  • Forklift and pedestrian traffic.
  • Work in multiple departments and production areas throughout the Panel Plant.

Required personal protective equipment must be worn as designated and includes safety glasses and hearing protection.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Central Utility employee becomes someone the operation can count on wherever help is needed.

You can safely operate a forklift, learn different pieces of equipment, move between work centers, recognize quality issues, and quickly adjust when production priorities change.

You don't think of yourself as having just one job — you understand how the different parts of the operation work together and are willing to step in to keep things moving.

Most importantly, you work safely, bring a great attitude, support your teammates, and take pride in being someone the team can depend on.
