These roles often require skills in technology, customer service, and understanding platform operations, and may include positions like driver, moderator, or support specialist.

How does a Platform Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams by building and maintaining the underlying infrastructure, tools, and automation that enable smooth software delivery. They often work closely with developers to understand application requirements, help automate deployment processes, and ensure reliable system performance. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Platform Engineers may support troubleshooting, infrastructure optimization, and security compliance efforts across teams. This collaborative environment fosters a culture of shared responsibility for the reliability and scalability of the entire technology stack.

What are platform jobs?

Platform jobs refer to roles that focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing technology platforms—these are foundational systems or services that support applications, products, or business operations. Common examples include platform engineers, platform architects, and platform managers. Professionals in these roles work to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of underlying infrastructure, enabling other teams to build and deploy software efficiently. Their responsibilities often include automation, monitoring, security, and continuous integration/deployment. These roles are critical in organizations that rely on cloud computing, microservices, or large-scale systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Platform Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, systems architecture, and infrastructure management, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills help engineers work effectively with cross-functional teams and address complex technical challenges. These combined skills are essential for building reliable, scalable platforms that support business needs and ensure seamless software delivery.

Job description

Overview
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate the foundational technology platforms that enable secure, scalable, and efficient software delivery across the organization. This role focuses on building internal platforms and infrastructure capabilities that allow engineering teams to deliver applications quickly while maintaining strong standards for security, reliability, and operational performance.
You will work across DevSecOps platforms, cloud and hybrid infrastructure, networking, and enterprise technical standards, helping create reusable platform services that simplify infrastructure complexity and enable self-service development environments.
This role sits at the intersection of enterprise architecture, infrastructure engineering, and software delivery, ensuring that systems are standardized, secure, and designed to support mission-critical workloads.
LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.
Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build internal platform capabilities that support application development, deployment, and operations
  • Establish and implement enterprise technical standards and architecture patterns for infrastructure, platforms, and development environments
  • Develop and maintain DevSecOps platforms and CI/CD pipelines that support secure and automated software delivery
  • Design and operate cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments across AWS, Azure, on-premises, or edge environments
  • Engineer and manage compute, storage, and virtualization platforms supporting scalable workloads
  • Design and maintain secure network architectures and connectivity, including segmentation, zero trust approaches, and hybrid networking
  • Build and operate infrastructure as code (IaC) capabilities to standardize environment provisioning and configuration
  • Implement security boundaries, platform hardening, and baseline configurations aligned with enterprise security requirements
  • Support endpoint and collaboration platforms that enable secure productivity and engineering workflows
  • Manage infrastructure lifecycle operations including provisioning, upgrades, patching, and capacity planning
  • Collaborate with security, architecture, and product engineering teams to ensure platforms support secure, compliant, and reliable application delivery
  • Improve platform reliability through monitoring, automation, and operational tooling

Qualifications
  • Strong experience designing and operating modern infrastructure and platform environments
  • Experience building and maintaining DevOps or DevSecOps platforms and CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and hybrid infrastructure architectures
  • Experience with infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi, or similar frameworks
  • Experience working with containerization and orchestration platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including routing, segmentation, and secure connectivity
  • Experience managing compute, storage, virtualization, and infrastructure services
  • Familiarity with automation, configuration management, and platform observability tools
  • Strong engineering fundamentals including version control, automation, and operational reliability

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing internal developer platforms or platform engineering capabilities
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks and technical standardization
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices including automated security scanning and policy enforcement
  • Knowledge of zero trust networking, identity-aware infrastructure, and secure platform architectures
  • Experience supporting regulated or security-sensitive environments
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring, logging, and observability platforms
  • Familiarity with endpoint management and collaboration platforms
  • Experience working in cloud-native and hybrid enterprise environments

What Success Looks Like
  • Engineering teams can provision environments and deploy applications quickly using standardized platforms
  • Infrastructure is automated, reproducible, and managed through code
  • Platforms provide secure, reliable, and scalable foundations for mission applications
  • Enterprise technical standards are consistently implemented across environments
  • Infrastructure operations are highly automated and operationally efficient
  • Platform capabilities improve developer productivity and delivery velocity

Why This Role Matters
Modern organizations depend on platforms that enable engineering teams to move quickly without sacrificing security or reliability. The Platform Engineer builds and operates these foundational
capabilities-turning complex infrastructure into reusable, automated platform services that support secure and scalable software delivery.
By standardizing infrastructure, automating operations, and enabling self-service environments, this role helps ensure that development teams can focus on building mission capability rather than managing infrastructure complexity.
