What is a Platform Director?

A Platform Director is a senior leader responsible for overseeing the development, management, and strategic direction of a technology or business platform within an organization. They coordinate teams across engineering, product, and operations to ensure the platform meets business objectives and user needs. Platform Directors also manage budgets, set key performance indicators, and often play a central role in scaling and improving the platform's capabilities. Their work ensures the platform remains reliable, scalable, and aligned with the company's growth strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform director?

To thrive as a Platform Director, you need strong leadership skills, strategic project management experience, and a background in platform architecture or software engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with cloud platforms, enterprise-level software systems, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or PMP are highly valued. Outstanding communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities help set top performers apart in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for overseeing complex platform initiatives, aligning technical teams, and ensuring platform scalability and reliability.

How does a platform director typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals?

As a Platform Director, you will regularly work alongside product managers, engineering leads, UX designers, and business stakeholders to develop and execute platform strategies. This role often involves facilitating communication between technical teams and business units, ensuring that platform initiatives align with broader company objectives. Effective collaboration is key, as you'll need to balance multiple priorities, resolve conflicts, and drive consensus to deliver scalable solutions that support diverse user and business needs.

Title and Summary

Director, Security Platform Product ManagementPosition Overview
Mastercard's Security Solutions Organization is advancing a next-generation enterprise decisioning platform and related platform capabilities, including foundational data and decisioning services that support fraud, identity, authentication, cyber, financial crime, scams, and future risk domains.
The Director, Platform Product Management will provide hands-on product management for priority enterprise platform workstreams. This role translates approved platform direction into documented product scope, user-backed requirements, prioritized capabilities, adoption plans, and measurable execution outcomes.
Role Purpose
The role provides product execution ownership for assigned platform workstreams by converting approved platform direction into usable, technically feasible, and adoptable capabilities. The role documents product value propositions, captures user needs, writes requirements and acceptance criteria, supports feature prioritization, coordinates adoption planning, and tracks execution success.
The role is accountable for moving approved strategy into execution by clarifying the work, validating user needs, shaping requirements, preparing prioritization inputs, partnering through design and build, coordinating adoption activities, and measuring progress against agreed outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy Translation, Value Proposition & Product Definition
Translate approved platform direction into documented product scope, value propositions, execution plans, and outcome measures for assigned workstreams.
Convert platform direction into clear capabilities, use cases, requirements, acceptance criteria, and success measures.
Build a deep understanding of user workflows through interviews, working sessions, and stakeholder engagement.
Prepare product recommendations on scope, sequencing, trade-offs, and capability definition.
Ensure execution details connect to platform reuse, decisioning workload integration, adoption goals, and business value.
User Discovery, Use Cases & Requirements
Interview users and stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points, adoption barriers, data needs, and integration requirements.
Develop use cases, product requirements, acceptance criteria, workflow narratives, and prioritization rationale.
Clarify functional and non-functional requirements, including data inputs, outputs, latency, availability, performance, entitlement, and dependencies.
Maintain traceability from user needs to capabilities, roadmap priorities, adoption milestones, and success metrics.
Validate requirements continuously as capabilities move from concept through build, launch, and adoption.
Roadmap Governance & Portfolio Alignment
Support roadmap development by organizing demand, clarifying trade-offs, and preparing prioritization inputs.
Coordinate roadmap inputs across product areas so shared platform capabilities are reflected in execution planning.
Identify dependencies, sequencing risks, and reuse opportunities across assigned platform workstreams.
Provide clear views of demand, commitments, risks, decisions needed, and upcoming roadmap choices.
Create transparency on scope, deferrals, dependencies, capacity constraints, and execution status.
Architecture Partnership & Build Engagement
Partner with engineering, architecture, data, and technical teams to document trade-offs, implementation constraints, and reuse opportunities.
Work directly with delivery teams during solution design and build to clarify product intent, resolve requirement ambiguity, and support execution against user outcomes.
Support integration of platform capabilities with decisioning workloads, including data, workflow, service, and consumption patterns.
Prepare trade-off recommendations that balance product value, technical feasibility, speed, scalability, and enterprise platform principles.
Maintain clear product documentation, decision inputs, handoffs, and delivery context across assigned workstreams.
Adoption, Outcomes & Cross-Functional Alignment
Coordinate adoption planning, including target users, activation milestones, enablement needs, feedback loops, and success measures.
Experience & Qualifications
Required Experience
Experience in product management, platform product management, enterprise technology, data platforms, decisioning platforms, or related product roles.
Proven ability to translate complex product direction into documented requirements, execution plans, prioritization inputs, adoption plans, and success measures.
Experience partnering with engineering, architecture, data, and platform teams on APIs, data flows, integration patterns, dependencies, constraints, and reuse opportunities.
Strong ability to write clear requirements, acceptance criteria, workflow narratives, use cases, and feature definitions.
Technical acumen to understand architecture trade-offs, data flows, platform reuse, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements.
Ability to lead through influence in highly matrixed, global organizations.
Preferred Experience
Experience in payments, fraud, identity, authentication, cybersecurity, risk management, financial crimes, scams, AI-enabled decisioning, or enterprise decision platforms.
Experience translating product strategy into requirements, prioritization rationale, implementation context, and decision-ready trade-off materials.
Familiarity with agile planning, roadmapping tools, product governance, and structured requirements management.
Experience operating in a global enterprise environment with distributed stakeholders and competing product priorities.
Education
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Business, Technology, Product Management, Engineering, Strategy, Operations, or a related discipline.
MBA or advanced degree preferred but not required.
Skills & Competencies
Platform product execution and workstream management.
Product direction translation, requirements documentation, use case development, and acceptance criteria definition.
Feature prioritization support, roadmap sequencing inputs, backlog shaping, and trade-off analysis.
Working knowledge of data platforms, decisioning logic, APIs, integration patterns, non-functional requirements, and product-to-engineering handoffs.
Direct collaboration with engineering, architecture, data, and technical teams during design and build.
Adoption planning, enablement coordination, feedback loops, success metrics, and execution tracking.
Clear communication that connects product execution to agreed outcomes.
Leadership Attributes
Acts as a trusted partner to senior leadership and product stakeholders.
