What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the plan review position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plan Reviewer, you need a solid understanding of building codes, construction practices, and regulatory compliance, often backed by a degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field. Familiarity with plan review software (such as Bluebeam or AutoCAD), knowledge of local zoning laws, and certifications like ICC (International Code Council) certification are highly valuable. Balancing the need for thoroughness with efficiency can be demanding, especially when working with a variety of stakeholders like architects, contractors, and municipal officials. Good communication and organizational skills help address these challenges by ensuring clear feedback and timely turnaround of submitted plans. Successful Plan Reviewers take a proactive approach to continuous learning and collaborative problem-solving to keep projects on track and code-compliant.

What do plan reviewers do?

Plan reviewers evaluate building plans and construction documents to ensure compliance with local codes, regulations, and safety standards. They identify potential issues, verify that designs meet requirements, and may use software tools to assist in the review process. Their work helps ensure safe and code-compliant construction projects.
