What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pizza Chef, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pizza Chef, you need expertise in dough preparation, baking techniques, and food safety, typically supported by culinary training or relevant kitchen experience. Familiarity with commercial ovens, pizza peels, and point-of-sale (POS) systems is usually required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong teamwork make a Pizza Chef stand out in a fast-paced kitchen. These skills ensure consistently high-quality pizzas, efficient kitchen operations, and satisfied customers.

What are pizzas?

Pizzas are a popular Italian dish made of a round, flat base of leavened wheat-based dough topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and various other ingredients, which is then baked at a high temperature. Common toppings include meats, vegetables, and herbs, making it a versatile food enjoyed worldwide. Pizzas can be made in different styles, such as thin-crust, deep-dish, or stuffed crust, and are often served sliced for easy sharing. They are available at restaurants, pizzerias, and can also be made at home with fresh or pre-made ingredients.

What are some common challenges faced by pizza chefs in a busy pizzeria environment?

Pizza chefs in high-volume pizzerias often face the challenge of working efficiently under pressure, especially during peak hours. Maintaining consistency in taste and appearance across dozens or even hundreds of pizzas per shift is crucial. Additionally, they must coordinate closely with kitchen staff to time orders accurately and accommodate special customer requests, such as dietary restrictions or custom toppings. Effective communication and time management are key to ensuring smooth operations and customer satisfaction.

Job description

DESCRIPTION
About Pizzas & Cream
Pizzas & Cream has been a beloved part of the West Virginia community since March 2015. What started as a backyard wood-fired oven experiment on our family farm has grown into a thriving restaurant known for handcrafted pizzas and homemade ice cream made with real ingredients and real care. We are now opening a brand-new second location in South Charleston July 2026, and we are looking for the right team members to help us bring that same community spirit to a new home.
The Role
As a Pizza Specialist, you'll be trained on all aspects of our pizza production process - from hand-tossing dough to finishing pizzas fresh from our wood-fired rotating oven. You'll work at different stations based on how busy we are, and you may help with ice cream service during slower periods. We'll train you on everything.
Key Responsibilities
  • Hand-toss pizza dough to order
  • Build pizzas at topping stations following recipes
  • Load pizzas into our Marra Forni rotating wood-fired oven
  • Pull finished pizzas and place them on the finishing table
  • Cut pizzas, add final toppings, and coordinate complete orders for pickup
  • Maintain clean and organized workstations
  • Help with ice cream service during slow periods (we'll cross-train you)
  • Work as a team to handle busy dinner rushes
  • Follow food safety and quality standards

What We're Looking For
  • No experience required - we'll train you!
  • Reliable and punctual (this is huge for us)
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs
  • Food handler's permit (or willing to obtain one)

Compensation & Benefits
  • $12/hour
  • Shared tip pool participation
  • Full-time and part-time positions available
  • Flexible scheduling where possible
  • Cross-training opportunities
  • Potential to advance to Shift Lead for strong performers
