What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Piston Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Piston Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and thermodynamics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like ANSYS, and engine testing equipment is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure efficient piston design, optimal engine performance, and successful collaboration in automotive or manufacturing environments.

What are pistons and what do they do in an engine?

Pistons are cylindrical components that move up and down inside the cylinders of an engine. They play a crucial role in converting the energy from combustion into mechanical motion that ultimately powers a vehicle or machine. The piston's movement helps compress the air-fuel mixture and transmits the resulting force to the crankshaft via the connecting rod. This process enables the engine to generate the power needed for motion.

What is the difference between Piston vs Valve Technician?

Job description

A&P Mechanic – Piston Aircraft

Austin, TX | Full-Time | Day Shift

Who We Are

Not every shop gets to work with piston engine aircraft like Cirrus. This one does — and they do it right. This general aviation operation runs on one non-negotiable: every aircraft that leaves the hangar is safe, airworthy, and ready to perform. If you're an A&P who holds yourself to that same standard, keep reading.

What's In It For You

  • Competitive salary

  • Full-time day shift schedule (with flexibility based on operational needs)

  • Comprehensive benefits package

The Role

Front-line aviation maintenance for a mechanic who doesn't cut corners. You'll inspect, diagnose, and return aircraft to service — confidently and precisely, every time.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Perform airframe and powerplant inspections per FAA regulations and manufacturer requirements

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain piston engines and all associated systems

  • Service electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and mechanical components

  • Complete logbook entries, work orders, and FAA documentation with accuracy and care

  • Uphold safety protocols, quality standards, and all applicable regulatory guidelines

  • Collaborate with your team to keep aircraft airworthy and operations running on schedule

What You Bring

  • Valid FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Certificate

  • Proven hands-on experience maintaining piston engine aircraft

Bonus Points For:

  • Cirrus aircraft experience

  • Solid command of FAA regulations and manufacturer maintenance manuals

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical data

  • Sharp troubleshooting instincts and a methodical problem-solving approach

  • A genuine, day-in-day-out commitment to safety and quality workmanship
