Job description


Job Title: Grounds Laborer Seasonal

Department: Grounds

Location: 32 Farm View Drive New Gloucester Maine

Reports To: Grounds Manager

Status: Hourly โ€“ Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

A Grounds Laborer is responsible for maintaining and aesthetically-please and functional outdoor space. Their duties include planting flowers and shrubbery, weeding and maintaining the beautiful landscape and Pineland Farms public garden, campus and other properties at Pineland Farms.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Perform general lawn care and landscaping tasks, including mowing, string- trimming, edging, pruning, raking, and spreading mulch or soil
  • Preparing garden beds
  • Occasional irrigation system upkeep
  • Turf care and upkeep.
  • Working in the cut flower garden making arrangements for weddings, guest houses and The Market
  • Maintain plant beds by planting, weeding, watering, and caring for trees and shrubs. Such as upkeep in the apple orchard, roses, shrubs ornamental trees and Christmas trees.
  • Watering, transplanting and propagating in the green house.
  • Interaction with the public in the one-acre garden
  • Upkeep of all Pineland Farms Grounds; keeping the property weed and trash free.
  • Safe operation of various hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Assist with invasive plant removal.
  • Seasonal position starting mid-April Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • Prior Experience is desirable

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of plants and landscape maintenance.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license, with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving in standardized situations.

The employee must constantly lift, move, push/pull up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is often exposed to various chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderate, but in some cases loud depending on the equipment being used.

This position requires working in a variety of outdoor climates, including hot summers and cold winters, often in rain, snow. Employees regularly operate and work near machinery and equipment that may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection, hard hats, and safety glasses. While most tasks are performed outdoors, some indoor work may be required.
