Job Description: Chief Programming Officer

Pillar Media, home to STAR 99.1 NYC/NJ, STAR 93.3 Cincinnati, STAR 101.5, FLO 107.1, and KPOF in Denver, is seeking a Chief Programming Officer to architect, lead, and strengthen the on-air and content strategy across our family of stations and streaming offerings. This is a senior executive position with direct influence on audience growth, brand impact, and ministry reach.
What We’re Looking For
Our ideal candidate is a professional individual who will lead the strategy, execution, and continuous improvement of everything that touches the listener experience. The Chief Programming Officer will steward the on-air product and brand experience across all Pillar Media stations.
  • Excellent computer skills and acumen, particularly with station production and traffic software.

  • A minimum of five years large market experience preferred.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities are to direct and monitor the on-air presentation of the Pillar Media stations and all the essential needs that advance that performance, including: research, music audio, imaging audio, live/recorded talent, and promotional resources for all Pillar Media stations.
  • As the director and protector of the on-air brand, the main focus is to create content that attracts new listeners and keeps current listeners listening longer, working within the established mission and scope as defined.
  • Direct, train, and lead the programming staff to accomplish stated ratings, development and content goals through regular one-on-one and group meetings to communicate vision, build teamwork, provide performance feedback, and brainstorm for greater impact.
  • Subject to review and discussion with Executive Director, recruit and train a full roster of air talent and other personnel as needed to make all time slots as compelling as possible.
  • Create station on-air imaging that reinforces station values and position in a way that adds listeners and invites appointment listening. Develop system where imaging is monitored to remain effective, fresh, and on target.
  • Supervise Promotions department to create compelling promotions that enhance listening, build cume, create events, provide for name acquisition, and enhance the sales value of the station, and to utilize volunteers at events to spread the word on the station.
  • Work with and supervise Creative Services department for the servicing of station advertising and partner accounts, and the flow of assignments and projects through the traffic and production system.
  • Establish music philosophy and oversee music scheduling to ensure music selection is on target and accomplishing strategic audience, donor, and sales objectives.
  • Oversee the conduct of research to ascertain what music should be aired/added on the station and to what levels of rotation, and give oversight to the ongoing relationships and communication with the record labels.
  • Work closely with Director of Sales to co-develop promotions and programming features that enhance the sales value of the station.
  • Work with Development and Philanthropy departments to coordinate execution of on-air fundraising.
  • Create and supervise implementation of hourly clocks. Analyze log structure and execution of programming, promotion, advertising, and fundraising elements.
  • Oversee productivity and impact of Public Affairs department.
  • Work closely with Development, Philanthropy, Marketing, Digital, Events, and Engineering teams for maximum impact and increasing market-share.
  • Monitor the radio station programming and activities regularly to ensure a compelling presentation relative to our mission for our target listener and compliance with FCC rules, public affairs, company policy and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Meet with Executive Director weekly to provide progress reports and metrics.
  • Provide managerial support for Executive Director.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Executive Director.
  • Position requires travel (local and out of state), and at times evening and weekend hours.

Pay Range: $110,000 - $140,000
